  • Computer Quote

I just got a quote from my local computer shop. How does it look? Other than the SATA drive, which I'll change to an SSD, does it look good. The price is right. I will have the one workstation, so I am not sure if I should get the i7 or the dual Xeon.

AFAIK, the 4930 is a LGA-2011 socket not a LGA-2011v3 so it basically won't fit and is incompatible. Your local computer shop should know this! You'll either need to switch to a different CPU (5820k is equivalent) or switch out the MB and RAM to a x79 board and ddr3 ram. Both options will save you money as the MB and RAM should be cheaper if you stay with the 4930 or the CPU is cheaper if you switch to the 5820.

Good to know. They are building it for $150, but I am buying the parts.

          I would difinitelly go for i7 5960x.
I got 4 machines with 3930K (very simillar to 4930K) and they are working OK ... but if you choose x5960 the total cost increases 25% but the rendering performance increases 40%.

The computer shop guy said that, that configuration will only give me a slight increase in performance from what I currently have. He recommends the:

'The only reservation I have about this build is you will only get a slight boost in performance. A step up in significant performance would be a newer Xeon processor but I am told it would get into the 4-6 thousand range."

Do not believe him. I don't think this guy knows enough about rendering with V-ray.

I don't think so. You have only 6 cores in 4960. And 5960x has 8 cores.
And if you compare 4960x OC @ 4,2GHxZ vs 5960x OC @ 4,2GHz it still much better to take 5960x.

In my opinion 5960x is at the moment best $/performance choice.

What are you using for your OS HDD? I highly recommend an M.2 drive as the OS drive. Motherboard supports them at PCIe x4 speed, so it's the fastest HDD interface on the market right now. Just a thought.

Yes. I was going to add an SSD for the OS.

make sure you get a pcie m.2 drive not a sata m.2 drive. you can tell because they are the more costy ones. a sata m.2 drive has no advantage over a normal sata ssd.
