  • Any one know about difference in ram in server motherboard

So I've built this system which has a asus z10pe-d8ws server board. I got it with 3 16 gb dimms of ddr4 ram. Now I've gone to upgrade and I got another two dimms with 32 gb each. When I slot in the new ram it won't post. I can get it to post with either just the new ram, or just the old ram. But a combo of 16 and 32 gb just don't work. I couldn't find anything about that in the manual and thought to ask if anyone has experience with that sort of thing?

Before for any supermicro boards or any dell boards I could easily mix various ram sized dmms with pretty much no problem. But in this one, I tried seating them with any order I could think of, all 32 gb for first two slots, or one 32 one 16 gb in first two slots, but nothing works.

    Thanks!

That's not going to work in these boards...you will get the most performance out of running your memory in quad channel mode...so all of the memory will need to be exactly the same...if not, this board will NOT post. Sorry!

The z9pe-d8 ws motherboard was a little more "forgiving", but not the Z10PE-D8 WS. It's SUPER picky about the ram.

It should work, as long as CAS latency is the same.
Try to put 32gb DIMMs in A1 and E1 slot, 16GB in B1 and F1. You got 2 cpu's, right?

But I would sell your mixed ram on ebay and get 8 x 8GB for max. performance quad channel mode.

Their support told me it should work, but I doubt they know what they are talking about

Their support also told me that non-ecc standard DDR4 RAM would work too! Nope!

@SaY: No matter what configuration or slots arrangement, I couldn't get different memory sizes to work...CAS latency was the same...machine refused to post.

I couldn't get anything but the same size ram sticks to work in my build...so now I have 8 * 16GB Sticks for 128GB total. This configuration will allow me to run in Quad channel mode for the memory. (You could also do 8 * 8GB sticks for 64GB total RAM.)

I'm having post problems with a Z09PE-D8 WS, even with 8 of the same non ECC RAM modules, I've let a hardware freak, test almost all configurations concerning latencies and voltages and whatnot, because I had a lot of BSOD and boot problems. After a week he finally found a configuration that runs stable and boots consistently everytime. Well one month later, it seems this motherboard has gone completely retarded. BSODs, boot problems, etc etc... nothing changed. Last time I order an ASUS motherboard, the motherboard before that one was an ASRock and I had the same shit, but that turned out to be the motherboard itself.

Sorry to hear your trouble. I had good luck with supermicros, but they have some moving parts on their boards like small fans, they break and fall off after a few years then its a problem

Haven't heard of those yet, but they seem to have a rather large product range. I might consider it in the future.

Yeah a few boards I've dealt with from supermicro were rock solid boards. I could put any ram sticks in them in any combo order really they all just worked. They arent pimped out like asus with overclocking options etc though. I've checked a few new ones they have, and they've removed those little fans from there so they should be even better now.

If I only knew the issue with ram I wouldn't have gotten this board Now I'll try getting 2 more 32 gb sticks and just forget this ever happened
