The one you posted is really really good. 128 gb of ram too. I'd get that one if you could.
I'll shoot for that one, thanks!

Nice machine but just an FYI...the listing title says it's a 2699v3 but the specs say 2696v3.
      www.dpict3d.com - "That's a very nice rendering, Dave. I think you've improved a great deal." - HAL9000... At least I have one fan.

the 2696V3 and the 2699V3 are the exact same CPU, the 2696 is the OEM version of the 2699 and thus way cheaper.
That's why people that build server grade nodes by their own tries to by the 2696 from ebay as second hand as it's literally half the price (or less) than the 2699.

I'm thinking to build one myself for the last couple of months and I would definitely go for the 2696.
Somehow I'm waiting for the V4 of the e5 that should be around the corner now. It will push the price down from the V3 (or be good enough to consider buy new straight but I doubt I'll have the budget for that)

This one sold, but was then listed again, however, it has Linux installed as its O/S. I'm assuming it wouldn't work for me.

It doesn't matter what os. Those machines can run anything. You'd just have to wipe it and install what ever.

So, I have a feeling if I don't buy something soon, you guys will tar and feather me. I am needing something faster, ASAP. This one went off but has now gone back on.

                Dell Precision T7910 36-Core Max 3.8GHz 128GB RAM 1TB SSD Beats Dual E5-2699 v3A

This machine sounds insane and is $5400 (new listed for $15,000). It has Ubuntu Linux, which sucks, but other than that, any reason not to buy it?

They can custom build and spec'd me:

                  28-Core Dual E5-2695 v3 (QGN4)
                  64GB (8x8GB) memory modules
                  512GB SSD
                  Windows 10

$4,200, which is a lot less machine for only $1,300 savings.

Can V-Ray and MAX utilize 26-36 cores? With hyper threading on, that's an insane amount of buckets in one machine. I remember people posting issues that were having.

                      It's been fixed since SP3 I think.
It might still be dodgy from what I remember but it seems to be working well most of the time.

I would definitely recommend going the dual xeon way. I have a dual 12 core and dual 8 core and they work like a charm.
Your increased productivity will pay off in the end, in my experience anyway.

At my office Ive been using an HP Z820 36 core Xeon and never had problems running V-Ray with HT on. Attached is a SS I just took firing up a rendering with V-Ray.
