thats an excellent (even suspiciously) good price!

id even consider buying one to ship to Europe if i didnt think id get stung for a vast quantity of import tax. you can bet theyd apply it based on the list price.

it says that is a $15000 computer. Also, I remember seeing a QA about why they are selling them so cheap.

Does anyone have reference for how loud these dell workstations are? My 5820k is damn near silent even when running 100% which is great for me. I could stomach some fan noise but anything that approaches the noise my render farm makes is totally unacceptable (my farm is mainly Supermicro 1U dual xeon servers).
        www.dpict3d.com - "That's a very nice rendering, Dave. I think you've improved a great deal." - HAL9000... At least I have one fan.

supermicro 1u servers are deafening. you need ear defenders in a room with them.

i believe that dell workstations are generally very quiet.

yes i saw that.. they have replaced the processors that came originally with the machine with a different model..

however the model they have replaced it with is still an *extremely* expensive processor if you buy it off the shelf.

This means (reading between the lines) that they are using ES (engineering sample) chips in this machine.. these are cheaper, but not meant to be sold as they are distributed by intel for testing. ive never had experience with ES chips, but i do know that intel do not guarantee them, and ive heard scare stories about defective chips, or chips with features disabled.

having said that, this seller is based in the US and offers postage replacement of any problematic chips.

approach with caution, but dont necessarily run away..

Good to know, thanks. $5500 is a lot less than $15000, however, it is still a good chunk of money.

Another computer seller on EBay says that it is one of the processors, but this one doesn't. I did some research and found that you can't sell a computer with those processors. I'll find out more and report back.

I emailed the seller and he responded with this.

"The processors in the machine are OEM production processors as described in the listing."

hm, ive no idea if OEM as a term can cover ES chips.. if they are not ES chips, i cannot see how he can make a profit at that price!

in any case, if they work, have the right performance and number of cores, and he guarantees his product (and in the US) , i guess its fine eh?

I'm at a point were it'll make sense. I spend way to much time waiting and working all night because of it. Most of what I'm doing, on my current machine, takes 3-4 hours. If I can cut that in 1/2, it'll be a dream.

I render most things at 4K, both interior and exterior.

ahhh that makes sense....I tend to work smaller unless specified...typically 2550 pixels wide...about 1 hour long renders with things tweaked and of course depending on the scene....I have an aging render farm of dells that amount to 28 processors and those equal roughly your current machine (dual 6 core if I remember correctly). A friend got a dual 6 core....we ran a test and It rendered in about the same time as my old farm.

If (when) I get this bad boy I'll be sure to run some benchmarks. At my local big box store they have a DELL 6500 with 32 GB of RAM and a 4GB video card for $1000. Knowing I could purchase 5 of those for the cost of this one makes me wonder which would be faster.
