Well I for one would like to see both max and vray running in a stable 64bit linux environment (but I guess that won't ever happen)
Actually - just before we left for Siggraph, we managed to get the Linux port of the standalone working Needs more work on the UI and some code organization, but it can do everything that the Windows standalone does.

Best regards,

well, look like chaos is doing THEIR part. Dont hold your breath waiting for autodesk though... what would be the advantage of using the linux standalone as opposed to the windows standalone?

Heh, well I was actually only guessing at the Max part, as I always had the confidence in Vlado and the team (Linux is a locical step for standalone environments I would think). But still, I'm gladly surprised to hear you've gotten this far
Well I looked at the 3dsmax8 beta - nothin' really awesome and totaly new. Viewport has been accelerated quite a bit, but it needs more ram, especially if you're draging 1.000.000+ polygons in wireframe mode.
Hair and Fur still drops max then mesh is quite big (1million+ polys).
No Pelt mapping in my version...
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

I didn't see the demo myself but was chatting to a guy at the Vray booth at Siggraph who said that Discreet did a demo of 3ds running in 64Bit. He said that it was pretty impressive and very fast. I have a gut feeling that we will be seeing 64bit 3ds 9 - sooner rather then later, whether they rebuild the entire code or not.
The advantage would come if you want to build a render farm - you can install Linux on the server nodes instead of paying for Windows licenses.
That's awesome news. Is there a OSX port in the works? I was deliberating picking up a Mac for my publishing work - this would make it a greater incentive but I've been hesitant to drop the cash on something I may ocassionally use...

Why? Every publishing program used on the mac is also available on PC, some better (for instance Illustrator has issues on OSX Tiger, and the Adobe Suite / In Design are missing features on the Mac side). Why purchase a second expensive machine for it?
DHL just delivered my copy of windows sp professional x64

Great you'll have to keep us updated on your experiences with stablility. I hear it is pretty good ( from my brother who is the real tech in the family). What are the specs of your machine ?
created a particle cloud. turned the particle amount up to 50,000, created a teapot and set the teapot as an instanced geometry for the pcloud clicked render and scanline crashed max and vray gave an exerption.
memory usages
166mb when the file is open,
1,349mb when i get the vray exerption
when i click cancel it stays at 1,373mb

PCs do not handle type as well (special characters, shortcuts, kerning, ligatures, etc...) The majority of publishers and printers still use Macs which kinda forces me to use them for type compatability issues... I had to turn down a quick thousand dollar job last Friday night cause one educational publisher wouldn't let me use AI on a PC (due to type compatability.)
I wish it was the other way around - but just wondering how difficult/easy a port would be. I'm sure Maya/Lightwave users would rejoice.
