heheh Craig, some might say this thread is also atop that very same slippery slope
Oh, I don't know. A strong community is one that learns to appreciate and even rely on each other even when our backgrounds and opinions differ greatly. So even if you think I'm a self-righteous religious prude and I think you are a god hating heathen, if we still have a common goal (great 3D) and a little respect, we're better for it.
Craig
BTW, I really don't think you're a god hating heathen.
I was more talking about the thread going down hill into a religion slagging thread.
Which was basically the whole thing I tried to avoid by my comments to ipraiseg.
So in takin steps to avoid it, it appears to have happened anyway.. mind you I have to offer special thanks to you for that
Ahh its all good
P.S. I really dont think your a diehard churchy la femme either
Lets get this straight. I am not just talking about Hitler I am talking about tools that are used to control Society. What happens when religion enters the power structure, it starts dictating what is right and wrong according to a set of guidelines that nobody voted for. I am for women's rights, I am for the rights of gays and minorities, I am for reproductive freedom. When I take a look at history, recent or ancient I see religion abused by the established power structure to deny people fundamental human rights.
It is happening now, it is happening is South America, where they deny condoms to a society on the precipice of Aids, or in North America were they deny Gays the right to marry, or in the Middle East where they deny women the right to drive, work or study. It has nothing got to do with loving your neighbour. But it has everthing got to with controlling what you think and what you fear and who you vote for - and that is why I believe it should be kept seperate from education, government and 3D forums.
I think alot of you guys are moderate and tolerate other people's beliefs to some degree which is great. But in certain parts of the US (and other parts of the world) this is not always the case.
a judgmental religious type who automatically thinks non-religious people are bad.
Well - I take it as sarcasm and wasn't implying that towards you. But for most religious people I find this is more often the case than not. People have an underlying insecurity and fear to put down others in order for them to feel better about themselves. Religion happens to be one of those institutions that people wear as a shield or a weapon.
come to my house and say you have to donate 25% of your cheque to us...what kind of belief is that?
One that apparently needs money lol.
and I would hate to see everyone getting mad at each other.
No hard feelings at all here - I can't speak for everyone else. I like philosophical discussion and discussing cultural beliefs. It's unrelated to Vray but it is 'off-topic.' Perhaps we need 'a really off-topic' section. It's healthy to not talk about 3d and renderings all the time.
Adam, the problem with your thinking is that true belief goes so deep there is no separation in thinking. A Christian should make any decision based on what they perceive is the right or wrong thing to do, regardless of whether they outwardly profess this through signature lines or t-shirts or whatever. This is probably true for most religious people. So what you really want is a world devoid of religious people so as to ensure no social control in that manner what-so-ever. To sit back and say that someone believes in something and yet there is no effect of it in there life is one of the main things that give many religions a bad name.
How this pertains to this forum...it really doesn't. Most of what is discussed here is the technical aspects of rendering in 3d. So , as long as we can all contain ourselves and not get too offended by a tag line in a signature, or rather explicit violent or lewd avatars, all will be well. If we cannot do that, then yes, this probably should be a place were it isn't allowed. But then that should go for all of it, not just the religious stuff. To me, and it would seem others, that is more of a poor reflection on us as a community than anything else.
Being a devote catholic, coming from a place where Stalin murdered people for owing a bible, I do believe religion should be kept out of goverment and schools. It's up to the parents to teach them about God. There is, however, a crusade against God in this country. I, personally, am not offended by anyone who displays any religious avatars. Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buhhdist... Eventually we are all going to the same place.
For me many of the good elements of Religion are purely common sense, tolarence, empathy, kindness - it makes sense not go kill people, or want to sleep with their wife. Religion can act as a great social club that takes care of you from cradle to the grave, it makes sense to settle down with someone who has the same core social values as you have, to instill those values on your family, this can all be good stuff nah great stuff.
The bad elements of religion only come, when that same social club tries to judge other people and subject them to a moral code that they did not wish to sign up. Can somebody please explain to me how somebody elses sexual preference affects my life ? Or why a cartoon on the other side of the World is reason for me to riot and kill ? How does any of that affect an individuals belief system?
I have been in the States for 8 years, the rest of my time was spent in Ireland, a devoutly Catholic country. A country that has been scared by religion and in some places torn to pieces by it. A county that has practically now division of Church and state and I would argue has been adversly affected by it. I bring only a caution of how destructive it can be when people believe that God is on their side and the balance between common sense and religous beliefs in tipped in the wrong direction.
