AFAIK it works like any other atmospheric effect.
Produces proper lighting without any light in the scene, as all volumetrics in vray are emissive (provided color is above [0,0,0])
That's to say, another hats off to the good, *older* Vlado

ill try and up something soon. doing lots of smoke only effects at the moment. So far so good. except from using a huge amount of disk space!

each frame for smoke only is around 150-200mb, which adds up over 100-200 frames. for each smoke sim i reckon from around 6gb to 20gb. for explosions things get even bigger. i was clocking 400mb a frame for some frames. havent done a final explosion sim yet, thats planned for tonight. takes about 8hrs. smoke only scenes, about an hour at full quality to sim.

                    in short, lots of waiting..

Well, here's the test sim. Without shadows. Time to render and to sim approx. 10 seconds per frame. Nothing especiall, just testing. God, there's lot of parameters to tweak . . .

is that a bug? the white spot on the sphere that comes and goes. almost looks like a light source thats not supposed to be reflecting then when the smoke passes over it screws things up and the white spot appears

No no. It is all ok.
I just used adaptive subdivision (damn fast), with -2/1 That's why it forgot to AA vrlight reflection
