So not all settings still apply i think. But the principles are still the same.
Another tip I can give you is buy the dvd's of Christopher Nichols. I have the Global Illumination: interiors. It has learned me alot about the principles too.

To create the lighting like the pic, I think the lighting setup would be
- VrayLightMtl for the lighting at the top in the wall
- Target spot with inverse square decay or IES (tutorial on Evermotion for that)
As they said, there's no one solution to all problems.
