I guess thats right...the scene I am rendering is very complex and has a lot of proxies but I thought that memory was loaded and unloaded per bucket to save memory...although Im guessing if you have 8 buckets going at the same time that mayb use a lot more memory. Would turning off hyperthreading help to reduce memory usage ?

And one note about the crashes:
Well, I am not sure this is the same problem you are having but I wanted to share my discovery. I used the have MANY crashes with 2011 too and found out that these were caused by new Autodesk's file menu.
I couldn't find a way to disable it but I enabled the "max own file" (the old one) menu and start using it and 99% of crashes are gone.
You can enable the old file menu Customise User Interface/Menus.for my blog and tutorials:
