Reminds me of when I tried 3dsmax 2015 - I was getting a lot of slow down with objects and trying to use the layer manager. I rely heavily on using the layer manager to hide and freeze sets of objects so I can work with a lot of geometry. I ended up sticking with 2012 which I haven't had any issues with. Maybe I'm being stubborn but I haven't seen any improvements in the newer versions of 3dsmax. So unless Vray stops supporting 2012, I'm sticking with it.

it is a huge model, however the file size is less than 10MB; most things are proxies. All the building are joined per material and collapsed. I'm wondering if it's MAX, or I would see the same limitations in Maya or any other package.

ok thats just too much.. which version of max is this again? im on 2014 and i dont have such dramatic slowdowns, particularly if most of the scene is proxies.. my scenes are often 1gb plus and the delays are usually when i expect there to be delays.

3SD MAX 2015 - the scene is actually 56MB, but still not very large. Every button I click takes 30 seconds to respond.

Saves fast and renders fast. I did get a driver update the other day, which is for my GTX 970 (10.18.13.5582).

                  Seriously mate?

Seems to be a hardware or software installation issue as I don't think this sounds correct.

Can you flick the scene over to see how it performs here?
Save it as max 2014 though as I haven't jumped to a newer version yet.

I don't think its hardware/software, because I work on dozens of projects without issue. It has something to do with the 1000's of proxies. Maybe, 10's of thousands, I'll have to check. I'll see about zipping if up.

i once got those lags when a map or some asset was missgin and max was trying to find it every time i clicked on the viewport.
Chesk your asset manager to see if there is somethiogn missgin
also sometimes it helps to move all the assets to local folder on C drive and relink...worked once or twice for me

                            aaah this stufff....

ok so the reason why your viewport is being so slow is because of the proxies are displayed
You have proxies set as "SHOW WHOLE MESH"
Try settgin your proxies to use bounding box instead and scene is again alive.
This happened to me too in scene with much much less proxies than u have.
I dont knwo why.... Vlado ?

I also tried to use point clouds once to display proxies but i never got it to work.
                            Hope this helps.

Jesus, it's been 30 minutes I try just to open the file and be able to repath the assets.

You should really use at least forest pack and railclone if you can, your scene seems so easy but when I open the file, it just grind to a half.

it opened under one minute for me
i had the scene going in about 5 minutes including relinking the proxies
but than it was slow because the prxies were using the full mesh to display
