Even with the proxies hidden and the lights hidden, the scene is still incredibly slow for my standards.

I see here : 2912 street lights, 1239 exterior lights.
So with proxies, street lights and exterior lights hidden I finaly hit a 8 FPS in the viewport, and that's with no textures, and I still have 4522 objects in the viewport!
If you convert your scene to Forest pack, you'll do 150 fps easily, the scene is really not that big...
You should have 10 Bld of 1 object each and maybe 10-20 others for all the rest and done, your scene should be containing about 50 objs in total

I did run this script, which helped, I think.

I would I convert my scene to Forest Pack? Or, are you saying to do it over using Forest Pro, which isn't an option right now.

I never have more than 1000 objects in my scene. more than that and I found 3dsmax is too slow to my liking. I don't care about polygoncount though.

Maybe, turning the proxies to face didn't help. All I have in my scene, turned on, is three cameras. I am waiting 30 seconds for each move. If things are turned off why is it still taking so long?

Now, creating proxies of the lights. Would you recommend picking all of them and making one large proxy, or an individual proxy for everything selected? Currently, they are instances.

Converting to forest pack is fairly easy with that type of scene

You can tell forest pack to use any object in your scene as a reference object and he will place one of his instance at that spot.

I see that each street light is composed of 16 objects, that might be a issue, but if you can convert them to single mesh each one easily, then it should be pretty easy to do.

Let me know if you need any help with that

Could you PM me with a link to the scene or send it to info@vizioen.be, I wouldn't mind taking a look tonight if I find the time.

In addition to a situation like this. Attach all the objects of the street light in 1 object make it a proxy. And use objectreplacer from neil blevins to replace the old ones. If you don't want to use railclone or forest pack. That will make your scene a little lighter I think, but it will still leave you with a lot of objects.

Or you can use Instance To VRay Proxy - works like a charm

I just tried this, however the light vanishes. I am assuming that has something to do with the pivot point.

I think I am gaining on this. I have created proxies of all the street lights, building lights, and I organized the layers a little better. Now, each plant specie is on it's own layer, instead of all under a tree layer. Out of everything, I think separating the plants into a more organized file structure had the greatest impact on speed.

But, still too slow to not make me scream every 2 minutes. Now, I am going to make all the proxies display to be box. Let's see...

Especially the material browser. Setting all the proxies to box did help, but it'll make fine tuning things a pain.

Hmmm weird. NEver had this problem so far, apart a little display bug which quickly disappeared.
                                Have you solved this ?
