Bobby,
I'm guessing you work with cad files all the time, bringing cad lines into max. My experience with cad line work, blocks etc. is that it always gives max a hard time. I try to limit the cad stuff I bring into max to just clean polys that I have created in acad and civil 3d surface models exported out of civil 3d as VS3PD files.

That being said, dealing with crashes is a fact of life for us but no professional should ever lose hours of work because of it. Here are two things I started doing many years ago - and since that time I have never lost more than a few minutes of work. In fact, most crashes now are just a simple reboot and on with the job...
First, create a personal culture of consciously noting the feeling of "accomplishing something", anything that took some time to do - and every time you feel it you simply save the file. Yes, sometimes you will be working on larger files that take longer to save, but I guarantee that waiting for saving in most cases is much better than going back and re-inventing the wheel!
Second, and any time you accomplish something really significant, go ahead and save with the + sign in the Save dialogue. This will save your project in its current state and is a great way to "freeze the moment" in time forever. I'll save incrementally like this many times per day and I cannot tell you how many times this has saved my butt!
A hint - Saving takes much less time now that I am using solid state drives for not only the OS and applications, but also for the current project I am working on. When the project is done I archive it on normal drives but having the current project on a fast drive is a real time saver and makes all this saving just that much faster and easier.
And if you already know all this stuff, then I apologize for taking up your time but hope it might help someone out there somewhere. It sure has helped me and the many folks over the years I have taught it to.

All good stuff! Yes, I save often, however sometimes I do forget. Actually, every save saves a copy, so I have many duplicates. I tend to save 30-40 times a day and I delete all but the last few at the end of the day.Bobby Parker

Yes, I have found that to be the culprit , too. I emailed them before about it and I think they pointed the finger at V-Ray. I use PSD Manager all the time, so I rarely turn it off afraid I'll forget to turn it back on.Bobby Parker

To sum it up - if you cancel mid render - psd-manager does nothing. However, V-Ray simply shows the name of the first render effect in the progress dialog, while it or 3ds max itself still cleans up memory or something else (I don't know). We discussed this way back both in the psd-manager forum and in the Cebas forum.
For reference: http://forums.chaosgroup.com/showthread.php?69096-PSD-Manager-Slow-to-kill&highlight=psd+manager
We both also discussed this delay in the Cebas forum and there you made Mu********er out as the cause. I outlined some simple steps to clearly figure out what exactly triggers this behaviour. Unfortunately the thread is still waiting for your reply. So that is were things stopped.

I'm not saying that psd-manager could not in some way trigger that behaviour. It has to request certain data from the renderer when rendering begins (G-Buffer channels). However, psd-manager is not responsible for the delay when cancelling the render. The plugin is not doing anything at that point in time - the render progress dialog display text is misleading (just put some other render effect as the first one).

I guess it could be misunderstood as offensive, however, that wasn't my intention. I clearly remember posting on the Cebas forum about the major delay when ending a render, while using PSD Manager, and I was told that once you cancel, basically, PSD Manager waits for V-Ray. So, as far as I was concerned, that was a valid answer. I was almost defending PSD Manager, which is evident in my reliance on the plugin, in my work flow. Anyway, I would love to try anything new you guys are doing.
Here is the Cebas forum post (https://www.cebas.com/forum/index.ph....msg873#msg873)
