Made a really quick scene with Vray fur
I have to say one thing!
Rally nice tool to work with!
Made a few "longhair" carpets, and the result are very good, render out very quick to!
Here in this scene there are about 400 000 "hairs".
Vray Sun/sky as a light source.
Rendertime: 4m 16 sek. (not very high quality though.)

The latest nightly builds give you the ability to assign a material to the fur. You can still leave it without a material, in which case the material of the underlying mesh will be used. That can be convenient if you want different materials for hairs based on what face they grew on.
You can try Maya hair rendering in V-Ray in tomorrow's nightly build ( 2010-02-18 ). It is not completely finished ( for example motion blur is not supported yet). But it should be usable.
