Works really well and is incredibly fast! 10000 hairs on one face rendered at under 10 minutes on a Macbook.

It should be the same as for the builds themselves.

Made a really quick scene with Vray fur
I have to say one thing!
Rally nice tool to work with!
Made a few "longhair" carpets, and the result are very good, render out very quick to!
Here in this scene there are about 400 000 "hairs".
Vray Sun/sky as a light source.
Rendertime: 4m 16 sek. (not very high quality though.)

Is it only possible to assign one material to both the fur and mesh?

Fun stuff though, it's nice to make grass this way over displacement. Thanks V-Ray devs (again!)

The latest nightly builds give you the ability to assign a material to the fur. You can still leave it without a material, in which case the material of the underlying mesh will be used. That can be convenient if you want different materials for hairs based on what face they grew on.

a quick start with Vray fur. It would be great to be able to control base and tip size

You can try Maya hair rendering in V-Ray in tomorrow's nightly build ( 2010-02-18 ). It is not completely finished ( for example motion blur is not supported yet). But it should be usable.

                        Greetings,

You can use the "Taper" parameter to control the tip thickness relative to the base.
