  • Reflected Environment Set up- Tutorial

Reflecting materials are very common, if the environment set up right then the reflections would be more realistic.
There's lot's of techniques to do so, for example: HDRI, Backdrops/Billboards.
So here one way of setting the Environment.

Note: Loading images can take a few moments and longer on slower internet providers.

I hope this tutorial was productive for VfSU users.

      Nice tutorial.
I didn't realise you could resize objects with the tape measure. That's awesome. If I only had know that earlier...

p.s. for your curtain wall, if you add a slight bulge bumpmap you increase the realism as window surfaces are never perfectly flat. some distortion happens.
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

        Thanks Thom,
Yeah those little tips/tools make a huge difference in the workflow and modeling
About the bumpmap,i totally agree with you i tried to add displacement but it required too much RAM memory (i have 2gb) so it crushed :-\

            Hi Guys,

How do you get your shadows so soft? and those trees! wow, could you tell where to find them.

What is bulge mapping? is this different from displacement.

            Thanks.

              artchung, you are too kind

              Tomass,
1.For soft shadows i increased sun size to 6 an and shadows subdivs to 16 (http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/150S...raysun_sky.htm).

              2.Trees are Xfrog trees (http://asgvis.com/index.php?option=c...0&topic=4684.0)
By bulge he meant Bump/Displacement map.

You don't have to use displacement. Bumpmap is enough so that the reflection distorts.

Re: Reflected Environment Set up- Tutorial

For sky reflection you can use Vray sky, but it won't give you clouds. So i used an HDRI image for Environment background.

                              Link to the HDRI- http://rapidshare.com/files/15627304...017_L.rar.html

                              1. Environment>Background>Click on the 'M'
                              2. Select 'bitmap' under type
                              3. Click on the 'm' and select the image from it's location on the hard drive.
                              4. Under UVW select Environment, and spherical under mapping
                              5. Under multiplier type the intensity/brightness of the image (the number depends on a lot of variable- if you have physical Camera turned on then you have to bump the multiplier to thousands)

*For adjusting the HDRI to the sun direction use the Horizontal Rotation (in my case i used 45 degrees).

                              That's it
