  • ocean wave foam shader help needed!!

    Hello guys,

I have a new project where i have to create an ocean. I have used the free houdini wave plugin for 3dmax 2013 and it works as a charm. Only thing i get stuk on is the shader. I have an material i am kinda satisfied with(i dont know how to get it better so im ok with it for now and it renders quite fast) but the main problem is creating foam that is realistic in its behavior and looks.

Any ideas how to create such an shader or anybody who has such a shader lying around?

this is what i have so far!!

The foam i have created with vray blendmaterials and some noise maps. I have created a height map so the foam only works on the top of the waves but its rather messy and the foam never completely dies out so the water gets a white film on it. the shape of the boat you see (i deleted the boat because its still a secret project) is made with the same foam material and a vray distance texture.

    Hope you guys can help

Your choices are fairly limited with normal objects and maps as nothing aside from dreamscape or a particle approach will give you any kind of foam that'll generate on the peaks and then hang around for a while afterwards. Foam is actually pretty tough, I did a lot of shot on a short last year and used dreamscape for it - the foam itself doesn't look great but at least you get a mask that you can feed other things into.

Use Phoenix or PF or volume select

They buy everything I have been trying to get rid of the tiling on the foam but its a problem in houdini ocean plugin for max because that is causing the tiling. Its not randomized enough. Anybody experience with good setting for this plugin?

Might be worth having a few levels of modifier on your plane? As in do a large noise for the rolling waves (or use a displace) and then the HOT modifier for the medium level stuff with a material bump for the tiny bits? It's not great for really wide oceans tbh because of the repeat.
