  • Ice material

Im trying to make some ice cubes for a drink still im working into, but so far my ice cubes looks more like plain cristal instead of ice.

Actually the center of the ice cube tends to be non transparent, but just white, while the outside is more transparent, to achieve this effect i tried to make a copy of the ice cube and scaled it down inside the big ice cube, this little one i tuned down the REFRACT so it wasnt so transparent but more white, however in the render it looks like theres a white cube inside a cristal one.

ANy of you have any tips or an idea of how to make a realistic ice cube.?

    thanks.

as following what you say, I think fallof map can help you set up properly the transparency.Something like perpendicular paralell (switch it), also in the faloff map, map slots use some noise or something looking like ice bumpap texture, this sould help, to achieve it. I think

        thanks for the replies.

Check this out, and let me tell you the story:

First, this is a material and lighting practice as well as modelling practice, i model everything in AutoCAD, so this is my first MAX model.

The IMAGE 1 was made in VIZ, i cant (dont want to) use that file anymore because for some reason the unit system was on inches instead of meters (dunno why it changed) and the glass was at a size of something like 1388 meters!...since my next step was modelling a bottle (with real life size) i tried to scale down the glass, liquid and ice cubes, but then that messed up my camera view, anyways, i made a new file from scratch in MAX, which is IMAGE 2, same materials for everything, except the HDRI map and the table material.

In IMAGE 1, you can tell a dot line i draw, this is where i stopped the test render, so you can see two solutions in there, the brighter one is with the HDRI map applied on VrayRender settings to Override MAX Enviroment and override MAX Refraction/reflections, the darker one is the HDRI map applied only on MAX enviroment slot, i like this the better, is not so bright, but when i tried to uncheck this override thing on vray to get back to the first image, i lost control of the HDRI cuz it kept on showing way too bright.

Im trying to make a scene with a glass of whiskey "on the rocks" and then i'll model and add a whiskey bottle.

        Here are some questions:

1- HDRI: first time using this, can i make a sphere, flip normals, and appl the HDRI map on it?, so it shows as enviroment?, the thing is right now, using it onlñy as enviroment in MAX, is like outta scale, and everything looks blurry (like way too zoomed in)

2- Any advice on the ice?, what do you think of it?

3- As you can tell the whiskey looks better on the first image, even tho is the same settings, the HDRI type and the table material is affecting it color, but....it shouldnt be so different, dont you think?, i know it could be affected by illumination and what is reflecting, but not as much.

Thanks in advance, i hope you can help me with some tips to improve it.

        Sorry my english.

its been quite awhile since I made the scene and posted it so cant vouch for it anymore

thanks for the file, the screenshot looks like real ice, but im having problems with it.

your MAX scene has 3 ice cubes, big one, medium one and little one, all of them inside the other, so as soon as i open the scene and render, i get a black cube, if i move all 3 cubes apart from each other, the big one is black the little on is another colro and the medium one looks like ice, but if i ty to render a closer view, the render times are impossible, i cancel the render at 20 minutes, and it only rendered the first square (bucket), maybe is my PC (amd XP 1.7, 768 DDR) that is too slow, but if thats gonna take to render one ice cube, it ownt handle my scene with 3 or 4 ice cubes, thanks a lot tho, im gonna study your material settings and see what i can come up with.

PS: why the 3 superimposed cubes?, is that what it takes to render like theimage you posted?, if so why the first try renders black?

Ill have to take a look at this weekend, its honestly been almost a year since I made it. It was also made when there was no glossy interpolation i think.

I took a look at the file yesterday. Yeah it needed some tweaking. Im quite positive that it worked for the version of vray it was rendered with. I suspect later changes to the translucent coding changed it somewhat, as I remember vlado mentioning it. Its somewhat fixed, but I haven't been able to get it to look as nice as the above image. It was also rendering the glossy effects without interpolation and subdivs at 50, so it was quite slow. Its down to a couple minutes now. Ill try and upload something later today.

Hi Percy I took your cube and made a new one like below (thanks for your ChamferBox13). It's just Standard material of Metal Shader type with a little bit reflection of VRay Map. No glossyness and refraction involved so rendering was really quick.
