  • splash and foam on static object in ocean?

is it possible to make splash and foam around a static object in infinite ocean?
without a moving object, very little splashiness happens, so i figured i'd add a wind spacewarp which works fine, but there is of course grid visibility problems against the ocean shader :

i could use a bigger grid, but the initial shot is really far away, so it is not really an option. any tips on what i could try?

well, the waves in the ocean can't generate splash, because they are fake, just a rendering trick.
there is a possible way that may turn the ocean texture into real waves, using the mapper helper object.
this object can set the velocity by texture and the ocean texture is almost suitable, it just have to be shifted by 0.5 because it has an offset (vray displacement requires the textures in this form, so we decided to be compatible with it)
    i will try it

        well, seems promising
here is the scene and an image showing the result
the mapper is set to time constant 5 sec, that is too short perhaps, but i had no time for more. the shorter time constant suppresses the natural liquid movement but makes it to follow the texture exactly. the bigger time constant gives more freedom to the liquid, but you have to wait more frames until it enters in stable state.
the induced waves in the liquid look more realistic, they have peaks that produce splash.
the bad thing is that the ocean texture is relatively slow and this makes the entire simulation about four times slower.
the scene here is 1M cells, but for production i recommend to use 50M+

excellent! trying your scene, at first go there is no splashes, maybe because i'm on nightly or something, thresholds seemed kind of high. will do a resim and see what happens

it should work with latest nightly build, what revision you have?
