  • Export PhoenixFD to Houdini (VDB?)

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone has had any success exporting the Phoenix .aur files to Houdini, maybe via openVDB? I'd like to sim in Phoenix then manipulate in Houdini.

    Hello,

We have planned to export OpenVDB in the future, but currently it's not possible.

      Maybe stoke mx2 ?

Also you can use particles, to create vdb from 'em in H.
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

Thanks for the reply guys. Stokes not an option as we're a Maya house and don't have stoke available. Particles is a possibility though... I feel like something will probably be lost in the translation, but its certainly worth a try..! Truth be told I really like the speed and quality of fire I can get out of Phoenix, but Maya's very limited in its ability manipulate volumes once they are cached. I was hoping there was an easy way to crossover as needed. Oh well, put this down as a request to support VDB export for Phoenix..!

            Hello,

Do you really mean particles or are you referring to the grid, because VDB supports only grid content. If you have particles like foam, splash, FLIP liquid etc. you can export them to Krakatoa-style PRT files and find a PRT importer for Houdini. Otherwise, if you mean grid, such as smoke, temperature and oldschool liquid - still not implemented.

Ah ok, no I have (oldschool) grid based particles in my scene
Are there particles without grid implemented in the new nightly which I could export like you said?

              Thank you

Use the right click menu on the simulator and select "Phoenix FD export particles" - it's the particle groups that can be exported there that are available in the nightlies too.

Does it also work in maya?

Negative, it's max-only for now. Are you using Maya? We will add it to the nightlies in a matter of weeks and will update you here in this thread, if this is the feature you need.

Hey guys! Can anyone tell me if the OpenVDB export was added to Maya version; we're using v2.25.01 Nightly (rev.160430674 from Apr 30 2016

and if so, where I can find it in the interface?

                        Thank you!

Negative, we delayed it behind other tasks, in the coming months we'll be back on it.

I'm also eagerly looking forward to this feature!!

Also, is aur an open format so that other render engines could read them? (in case that would be faster to get other render engines to support it, than creating a openVDB converter.)
