I often find that creating simulations from scratch there is nothing visible in the render or preview even though the cache is created. Any tips on maximizing visibility or troubleshooting?

the default settings prefer exactly the smoke and fire, no idea how this happens. could you send us a scene?

the interaction list was set to include, and the source wasn't inside. one more thing - no need to set the wind as modifier, just add the force field as scene object.

Also does the source object need to be explicitly added to the include list?

you mean the source geometry? if you need interaction with it - yes. otherwise it will emit in inject or brush mode, depends on the source settings.

In the test file, where the source geometry was not in the include list, why wasn't there an emission in inject mode?

in the test file the source helper wasn't in the include list.
