  • Grid edge artifacts with ocean

I'm having an issue with an underwater scene that is causing the edge of the simulation grid to do some strange things. I noticed that it flickers in the renders from being fine to having this issue, and some further investigation showed that altering the camera (position, or focal length in the example attached) corrects the problem. So I can conclude that it's probably not something to do with those specific frames/sim cache, but rather an anomaly when the camera is at a certain position. Either way, it's an issue I need to resolve ASAP.

I have attached two images from the same frame time, one at 20mm focal length, the other at 21mm. There is a ship hull missing from this render which accounts for the shape in the middle of the frame.

looks like ocean seam problem, what is the version of the plugin? btw there is nothing in the simulator, why you need to see it at all? if you need just ocean surface without interacting objects, it's much better to put the simulator container somewhere away from the camera, it can only produce problems (like this one).

Hi Ivaylo, we're using a nightly (phoenixFD_adv_22000_max2014_vray_30_x64_25420). I've just isolated the Phoenix sim for those renders, and there are interacting objects as mentioned in my previous post.

Is this a known issue? Any way to resolve it?

      Thanks,

      Matt

you can try to use the latest build, if this does not help, prepare a small scene (delete all extra objects) and send it to us with single cache file that reproduces the problem.

Tried the latest build, problem persists.

What's the best way of sending the files to you? The cache file is 20mb, simplified scene file is 2mb

if the mail attachment is not working, ask the support, i think they have some solutions for such cases.

I believe support has forwarded the files to you. For your reference, the frame I have picked out is 205.

Awesome, thanks Ivaylo. Got to love the support you guys provide. I'll give the latest nightly a crack and let you know how I go (when it comes out, assuming it's not up yet since the current latest version still has issues).

yes, the only fact that worries me was that the bug is happening in very special case, and you said that you have several frames with flickering geometry. but let see how it behaves now. don't forget that our "nightlies" are built about 7 am GMT

Yeah, this is the first time I've noticed this bug, but from what I can see with the latest nightly it looks like the bug has been squashed. Great work Ivaylo, and I really appreciate the short turnaround to get this resolved!!
