im not sure if this is "bad etiquette" to ask what else is coming as my first post... but, given i already have forestpack and vraypattern, and, in the case of forestpack at least, works amazingly, there is currently a (for my use cases) a certain lack of new features which would justify a whole number version increase... i was so sure version 6 would be the one with the killer new caustics system....

I have to say - I agree with the OP.
Although there are some great new additions - this doesn't feel like a whole new version of Vray.
I think the impetus to keep updating more and more to justify yearly subscriptions could end up alienating the user base - as well as fragmenting it.
Not to mention the fact that there are still fundamental unsolved issues - like for me, fireflies when using depth of field or fog.http://www.jd3d.co.uk - Vray Mentor

This is not the complete list. We are months apart from the official release and there will be new additions.
As you can imagine V-Ray for 3ds Max tries to cover all industries that produce their content in Max. That means very different feature requests for quite various workflows and everybody thinks that their issues are the fundamental ones
Give us time and keep reminding us what is important for you. The only way to a better V-Ray is through constructive feedback.Last edited by matanov; 09-05-2022, 10:29 PM.If it was that easy, it would have already been done

OK cool - thanks for the response.
I just think it's fair to say that one thing we don't want is to drift into a situation where we are having too many full version upgrades.
Our feedback covers all aspects

We did some experiments with firefly removal which worked well but need a bit more research. We also looked into improved DOF sampling so that might be coming as well in a 6.x update.
It is maybe worth pointing out that updates typically add quite a few things in between major versions

Oh, a feature I would love to see (as it's not been updated in a long, long time in max) is a decent batch renderer, with auto-naming functions, ability to turn layers on/off per shot, etc.Check out my (rarely updated) blog @ http://macviz.blogspot.co.uk/

If you're talking about the caustic solver which is still in WIP then that certainly is no killer feature.
Replacing an outdated set of caustic settings with a new slightly worse workflow just to get "progressive" caustics is hardly worth the title of "killer new caustic system".
