maybe I missed something but I think you misunderstood the sense of my post
I bought Vray RT when it first came out.. it cost something like.. 200EUR? Don't remember the exact price. I got to use it for almost a year and a half for that money and it did help me from time to time. Now to upgrade my Vray 1.5 license to version 2 costs 400EUR (if I recall right) and I get Vray RT GPU for the same price. I've gotten tons of free updates to Vray in the past years; I would never in a million years complain about having to pay for RT or how some ppl get it for free when v2.0 comes out.
That being said, I do understand the frustration if you bought RT on july 29 2010 :P
Actually don't recall off the top of my head how much I paid for RT. But I did so when it first was released and I haven't really put it to use. It just seems odd that everything is getting updated almost a year later and being an early adopter did more harm. Perhaps I can be convinced otherwise with the Beta and any new, unannounced features that they are adding to it is worth paying more than new users.
As for complaining - yes I am as well because the pricing doesn't make sense. But hey, at least I paid for it versus 99% of the warez monkeys out there. That should at least count for something...

I'm pretty sure that 100% of the warez monkeys did not pay for it, just by the definition of warez .
The pricing seems a little off to me too. Not horribly so but it's weird that someone who never actually bought a license of RT can get it in vray 2.0 for the same price as someone who did. It seems like there should be at least some accounting that the person did, at some point, put out the cash for an RT license (basically something like what Zeronove proposes).
www.dpict3d.com - "That's a very nice rendering, Dave. I think you've improved a great deal." - HAL9000... At least I have one fan.
YKK. do you know what come after an addict can't afford his addiction anymore ??
I do but I fail to see your metaphor completely. All I'm saying is I've gotten much out of Chaosgroup software and am happy with it. The day I start comparing what I get out of this financially when compared to someone else is the day I quit. I understand some of us are more precise with financial stuff and you have every right to complain if you feel you are not being treated fairly.
I wonder how many folk are going to be spending x-hundred pounds/dollars on hardware to really let RT GPU fly? I bet they won't complain about that spend.
Remember - the upgrade is optional. Only do it if you can afford it.
I agree with the comments of the disappointed RT buyers above. I purchased two seats of RT and found them totally useless for my purposes. I have not used them at all. I was not able to test the DR capability before purchasing and so was not able to test the true capability before buying. I purchased the two seats to take advantage of the introductory pricing offered when it first came out. We were told that RT was a separate product so I purchased it in good faith believing that the product would continue to be developed. Now we are told that that the product is for all practical purposes discontinued and that we essentially purchased a license to tinker with it for a year. Those that invested early funded the development and those who were skeptical and waited get it now for free?
It seems only fair that those that invested early in RT should receive at least a small token discount on the cost of the upgrade. I know there are people using RT with success but I also know there are many who are not for some of the same reasons as I. I guess it's good news for those that waited. Lesson learned I guess I just didn't expect it from Chaos. This reminds of something that Adesk would do. I am disappointed with my purchase of RT especially now that I know the purchase was a total loss.
Hmmm...I guess I am a little conflicted here. I see where some of you are coming from, but you can't have everything for free.
I think that the fee structure is pretty affordable. I too work in a very small studio where money is tight, but VRay is at the core of what we do here. I feel that the upgrade cost is rather low considering that I haven't had to pay for an update for over 4years! Compare that with any other piece of software that you need to stay current with, ie. Photoshop, 3DS Max, Nuke, etc...
I guess if work is that slow, I would question the need for upgrading software period. I know many people have been hit hard and this will definitely impact their ability to upgrade, but at the same time I would like to see continued development and I am willing to pay for that.
I personally can't wait until I can send in my pre-order payment!
I'm not asking for anything to be free. I am unhappy that I had to pay for something I couldn't use (LWF) that others are getting free a year later.
