  • Corona and V-Ray Materials

I thought the materials were supposed to be interchangeable? Shouldn't I be able to toggle between renderers and not have to convert my materials each time?

I would have thought that by this time the conversion works but whenever i convert corona material to vray, i get a mess. Especially happens with foliage models. Ill post a sample here when i get a chance. In some case conversion doesnt work at all and you have to reset. I wonder how it works the other way round, converting vray to corona.

      For Corona :
      https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com...are-supported-

      For V-Ray:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWaQNFghMKs

You will notice both are WIP and with a very precisely laid out scope.
So, if you were outside of those bounds, you're currently out of luck.
If that wasn't the case, please provide support for a scene to look into.

        Why is that so?

Many basic materials should work fine, f.e. many of the materials in the Corona material library render ok when rendered in V-Ray, however if you are using specialized materials like blend materials or skin materials or other features that are implemented differently (f.e. thin translucency), then there will be differences. For example V-Ray does thin translucency using the VRay2SidedMtl material whereas Corona has some translucency as part of the basic Corona material. The two approaches are not equivalent and each of them can produce effects that the other cannot. Bump mapping is also implemented slightly differently between the two engines, etc.

With that said, I’d be happy to look into any scenes that are causing you problems.

          Best regards,
          Vlado

I guess I assumed I could open a Corona scene and render it in V-Ray or a V-Ray scene and render it in Corona. For instance, If I purchased a model that was for Corona and place it in my V-Ray scene, it'll just render black until I convert it. I have a few scenes that I can't render in V-Ray GPU so I am using Corona, but I have a lot of materials to replace.

Yes, but it isn't much of a big deal, I just thought I am missing something. I so want this scene to work in V-Ray, so after correcting everything Corona said was wrong with the scene I thought I would try it again in V-Ray, however, many of the materials didn't convert back. I had to convert them to work in Corona, which took 1/2 the day and now I'll have to spend 1/2 the day to convert them back to use again in V-Ray. Maybe a lot of puffing by the V-Ray NEXT marketing team .

Generally pretty smooth for me, it seems to be quite robust. I use it weekly along with a batch material script to correct old school reflection values and such.

What do you use weekly? My original understanding is you will be able to switch between renderers without the need for any kind of conversion. Open in V-Ray, render and done. Open in Corona, render and done, all with 100% compatibility. I am not fussing, I am just trying to dial in my expectations.

I got the impression Pixelbox was wondering how well the corona convertor works. My experience has been it works really well. I haven’t had a great deal of luck rendering unconverted vray materials in corona or corona materials in vray. There’s always some hitch, usually an unsupported map. That’s why I just default to converting for now. Just my $0.02.

Okay, thank you for the clarification. Yes, running the converter converts most, however, not all. The NEXT promise was no conversion is needed.
