but then you don't get any AA... or am i missing something?
I never had any AA issues exporting out the Zdepth from plain scanline. I usually set it to sharp quadratic and it seems to composite fine over any image using the 'lens filter' in PS.
I'm encountering a situation similar to RSF and his VrayProxies - thereby having to switch over from scanline. However, I haven't been able to get the 'file output' to render out a depth from my camera using values from the camera or by manually entering them in. And I don't have importable .rpf tools available.

(already posted the same script to this thread)
Bringing this thread back from death...have u managed to get an objectID channels with colors with the ChannelExtractor script? I only get a black and white image and some people in the team would prefer them to be clearly visible in colors...
I have tried to do it in combustion, but it seems to have some issues with hi res images (5000X2000px), it doesnt show any gbuffer channel, at all. It looks like videocard errors...
everyone keeps mentioning the coverage channel. i sure wish to see a tutorial on its usage

in my experience, you just include it in your rpf file and if the compositing app supports it (afik combustion, df and shake do) it gets used when doing things like z-comping
i know about that. what i want to see is a combustion scene tree that uses it. if someone could show a scne that includes DOF, Motion Blur all computer in post using coverage, z-depth and velocity channel. apparently your supposed to use z-depth when computer motion blur right?

In combustion, if the RPF has all the channels necessary, all you have to do is drop in a 3D Effect node and you're done. Nothing special in the tree at all.
I'm still not able to get a useable z-depth channel out of vray.
/// edit....
well.... just after I wrote a large explanation of my problem, lo and behold I suddenly managed to get the z-buffer working (not sure how I managed that!). Typical!
Anyway, for those that are having problems getting DOF working in After effects from your RPF files, I eventually realised that the default units used to adjust the settings in AE were far too crude.
I managed to get a nice result with the following settings.
Effect = Depth of Field
Focal Plane = -.9
Maximum radius = 1
Focal plane thickness = 0.2
Focal Bias = 5
No need for seperately saved z-channels. The RPF's work fine.
Have u tried to click on the image to set the depth values? In combustion it works this way, so maybe in ae is the same thing! You will find these values will change a lot between shots, though.
Anyway, glad u got it sorted but, what's that in your animation?
Sadly the AE Depth of Field effect doesn't have a hotspot funtion to set the depth you want in focus, so you have to work out the values yourself. I did try the demo of IrisFilter which does seem to have this funtion.... but the demo is limited to 300x300 which isn't much use for me.
and what is it? Its the external parts of a cochlear ear implant (battery pack and signal processor). The pad type thing transmits through the skin to an implant embedded in the head.
