One possible difference between the two modes is if you're overriding the gamma in the max file save dialog that pops up.
That's something not possible when you copy the image to memory buffer with ctrl+c.

Are you sure your max is set up right for LWF?

Attached you'll see the results of me loading and CCing an image in the VFB (VFB.jpg).
Then i copy/paste it into Photoshop (the central copy in printscreen.jpg), and is shown side by side with the jpg saved from the VFB (rings.jpg), along with rings.jpg loaded in FPV and MS Photos.

EDIT: i should hasten to add that my OS and apps are set up as default as possible, and work well under LWF. To say there was no trickery involved to get it to look right.

I have various VFB layer stuff going like a LUT, or tone mapping, but it all matches and the retouchers I hand over to don't get confused.
Ahh thanks, seandunderdale, so you also have trouble getting the same result with VFB also.. I am also using LUT and filmic tone mapper etc. Here's a screenshot of my VFB set-up in this scene in question. I ended up turning off the tone mapping in that section but it gave me the same result as using srgb.

you are probably displaying srgb in frame buffer and saving 2.2 with 3ds max. hence the difference.

Ah ok, the frame buffer has changed quite a bit since I last used Vray, I have the display correction set to none, and srgb its set to off, Is there another place I need to check my settings?.

most likely scenario for you is to display 2.2 (not srgb) and save 2.2. that’s it.

“save in image” in LUT layer checked?
