Here's a standard direct light, times are decreased greatly, but Poly is still in the lead.

I also tried switching to VRay Materials, the previous tests were Max Standards. I'll rerun the VRay light tests with the VRay Mats. This image is Max Light with VRay Mats. I placed the alpha JPG in the Refract channel, and set the IOR to 1.0

        Hi !
The interest in opacity map is the use of a good texture when you are
close to the plant. It avoids the plastic effect of primitives except if
you map it a texture that corresponds well enough to the primitive.
With the power of processors and the use of proxies, it becomes easier
        to work with opacity objects.

You have to find what use you want/need.
For instance, opacity trees may be in the foreground for details images
and ful 3d object in the background (full 3d object or shape of trees)

Vue infinite does use opacity objects on very big scenes.Times are
        of course, strong...
        Terragen will do the same.

In fact you have several possibilities corresponding to a pecular use.
Arboretum is an easy way to get 3D trees, moreover it generates
pine trees using vray fur for the needles so, you have both
opacity objects (9 trees) and full 3D objects (3 trees) with pine trees.
Another series of new trees with flowers will come soon.

        Look at this thread:

        And go here for Arboretum:

        Bye !

I too would be very interested in your trees. My boss will aslo be interested if they are "Cheap".

Did you disable bitmap filtering on the opacity map? This can speed things up quite a bit when using Adaptive QMC AA.

I don't know why it doesn't work all the time...
I often click several times on the links to get them working...
                Strange indeed

Tell me if the link stil doesn't work.
                Thank you
