Looks like we need a dongle FAQ here, I've noted the questions and will try to compile the answers in one place.

Wow. This is a bummer. I'm all for protection, but of all the ways I've used, dongles are least user friendly. Of course, that was years ago. Most apps have long since abandoned them due to the numerous problems and furious customers. And, in the end they didn't offer any more protection. Plenty of dongle simulators out there.

I don't get the license portability. Are there that many people who take VRay "on the road" without getting another license?

I too have had dongles break and spent numerous hours on the phone with everyone in the chain all pointing fingers at the other guy. Ended up having to give proof of bloodtype, second lien on my home and send my children to a sweat shop just to get a loaner dongle. PLUS, this was back in the LPT days. "Sorry can't us a printer thru our dongle." "Oops - no tablet either" I hope these issues are all gone now.

What i think is that after only 2 years that i own vray i think i deserve at least that all of the features will work properly .
a basic feature like dr is not working properly on the 1.47.03 release.
as for the dongle , i think i don't see what is so good about it.
its gonna delay our work if we have problems, especially at countries that don't even have a vray dist yet.
what if every plug in will start heaving a dongle?we will need a dongle server with multi usb just for that.
what I'm trying to say is dongle shmongle , give us the next point release with proper dr like some of the people here have.

          Which port for dongle?

Just curious: which port are the dongles going into.
I guess a great number of peple don't have old LPT1 any more so it must be USB or COM
If there is any voting, I'm against the dongle. It'll increase the cost of Vray and make the system more complicated if something goes wrong.
Yes, you guessed it- I had some issues with the dongles in the past!

Gijs has a good point. You can't use Vray without Max and once you install max with their license portability software Vray should just work.

So why even go to dongles when it will cause more issues for us honest, paying customers?

Is the dongle thing just delaying another point release by adding more overhead to Vray?

We are all anxious to get the next release of Vray as it has so many awesome features that will benefit us all(users of Vray). I know I am very anxious, and to be honest, a little frustrated another release hasn't come since May, as I keep reading and seeing examples of some of the cool new tools the next Vray will have. I particularly am looking forward to the render elements and Combustion workspace output as this will really make a huge impact on my work.

I am seriously hoping that this dongle thing is not going to throw a wrench into the whole works as many users have posted saying they have had problems with dongles in the past and I can see how this would add problems because now a piece of hardware is being added to a piece of software. This is especially concerning when one earns their living with this software and just can't afford problems to occur. My clients are not going to understand when I have a problem with a dongle. They will just say get the work done and look at me blankly if I mention a dongle to them. Hopefully, all will go well and there will be no problems, but I am concerned as it is adding another piece to the puzzle to go wrong and more for Chaos to worry about.

lets see what we have so far :
we agree that dongle will not stop piracy.
we know that chaos is doing this dongle for us users (the ones who pay the money)for our convenience.
why not make a poll and check if we really need this dongle.
ma-by you can save time and money and finish the 1.5 release faster.
i think you should ask us if we need something like that because we are the one who use the software and will pay for the software.
one more thing chaos is years far from heaving an authorized dealer all over the world , and since this is the case some of us users will have to deal with sending dongles back and forth to Bulgaria and you must understand that a delay of 1 day in our demanding business is unacceptable.
i always thought of chaos as a company that really want to make a better and easy to use software , this dongle thing is very frustrating for me.

Last week i got my new Pentium D. No more COM-ports, no more PS2-ports. Just USB.

I also don't prefer dongles. Just like some ppl said, it will take a few months before it has been cracked (just like viz some yrs ago). It's easy to steal a dongle (especially USB sticks) so i guess large companies also don't prefer dongles. Why can't you 'stick' with the usual serial? (Network licensing)

i like the idea of a dongle if it means i can port vray from my pc to my laptop.

if it's usb the only request i have is can the dongle be in the shape of a usb key (skinny)? so it doesn't make other usb ports unusable.

not much point in a pole as they have already spent many many hours on the new dongle system, and they are not likely to just scrap it.

I agree tho, a poll would have been good before they started down this track.

Yes I agree better late then never. Even if it has cost much time, that is no reason to cancel it. But let's wait a little longer until Vlado has composed the faq before making all sorts of guesses about what can go wrong.

ok guys. i have to say that it almost seems like your taking chaos for granted. vlado and peter have always made themselves accessable through the forum and have been general all round nice guys. sure we havent gotten a point release in a little while however back in the early days we used to get them all the time. was exciting back then. we get to hear about upcomming features and a whole bunch of stuff. now then lately on the forum people have been down right demanding things. if chaos was like adobe or any other software development company you could forget point releases. we would have had vray 1 and then 1.5 no iinbetweens. we wouldnt know whats going on with features. so i think we have gotten alot. as for having a poll. gee. i dont remember adobe having a poll to discuss the addition of x or y feature. If the dongle system isnt up to par when you get it then complain at that point. lets not put down the guys who have done so much for us for something that you havent even seen yet.

stupid questions the forum can answer.

                              did i read dongle?

Oh, man what are going to do here... we had dongles all the way till the year 2001... max dongle, mentalray dongle, cad dongles,..etc...

God, I hate that bullshit. Do, you know how often they get damaged?
Yes, next time you shut down your computer watch out! And then... well, then wait 2 weeks till you get the new one.

The current model works perfect... what would be the difference? A dongle that lays in a drawer never used, but cost $30...

I have done 3 years official support for max, fusion, combustion and plugins
and dongles always have been the biggest problem of all license systems.
I don´t see a reason why vray should need a dongle now. The license system
always worked very well.. for my part. What should get easier if we get dongles now ??
