Well... if you think that CRAY's super computers (or IBM or Fujitsu ...) are not "work" machines....
The bigest computers in the world are all watercooled.

But maybe do you prefer running your 500$ processor near its Tjunction?
or maybe do you love the MIG 21 takeoff sound that produce your PC when rendering?
I seem to have started an air vs water debate.

I think there is room enough in the world for both. I don't see the value in watercooling except as a hobby. But for a renderfarm? Not for me.

It might be fine for a cray supercomputer, but that is not the same thing as a bolt on hobbyist kit. Which adds a whole new level of complexity to an already complex system.

I will take the risk of running a bit warmer over the risks of watercooling anyday. Watercooling risks the whole machine, not just the CPU. And now that high end air is what used to be the realm of low-end water, I am glad to skip the hassle.

And as for the sound of planes taking off - not here. Coolers like the Ultra-120 can be run almost silently - 2 quiet fans are as effective as one high CFM howler. In my Antec P-180 case, I can barely hear the fans, my hard drives are by far the noisiest things. I like near silent AND high performance.

But if you know what you are doing, and want that extra 5 or 10%, go for it. Just allow me to stand back (on something rubber!) :P

    • I am confused, I was under the impression that the water cooling kits no longer used water and used a non conductive liquid which should not cause any problems in the event of a leak. If I am wrong please inform me differently.

      • when the kit arrives later in the week ill test its fluid with a multimetre for everyone's benifit (especially mine)

        • I haven't seen too many of the Xeon 5345's tested so I ran it on my new systems. Only change to scene is setting light cache passes to 8 for the dual quad cores...

          • Time to upgrade I think

Think I will look into buying something new!

What do people tend to do with old machines? Ebay them or keep them as render slaves?

            • Give them to GF's

Or as im doing with my old X2, use it as a media server for streaming 1080p content to my new 40" 1080p LCD TV .. sorry had to say it

              • Haha, I am getting excited already because we are also sorting a 42"+ 1080p screen with a nice HTPC at xmas. My girlfriend and I decided over the weekend to buy it all together as our joint gifts to each other. My gf's ace haha.

I will run the bench mark tonight on the new machine I have built over the weekend and hopefully post tomoz.

                • already have my file server driving my tv with its 2tb of storage space :P

                  it also drives my stereo.

i do need a new tv however....

i keep old boxes as slaves, of course at some point they are too slow - for example i am getting rid of dual cores now, and only keeping quad core machines. but the file server is fine as a dual core.

Hehe im up to over 3TB drive now. Those new 1TB drives make things alot easier. 9 HDD's in a single case is abit much me thinks.

                        • nothing to do with this post...but here is the way I will try to push my quad core CPU more and more (probably near 3800Mhz 100% stable) in order to get near the "under minute rendering time".
I m sorry because of the french indications but Peltier or waterblock or Xeon is something that everybody can anderstand (I think) :

                          • askhamdesign, don't get the QX6700, get the Q6600, which is now less than £150 + VAT from ebuyer.com (probably similar price at scan too)... unless of course you have money to throw away but actually with the savings you could build yourself another Q6600 as a slave!

                              • Yeah good cases those thermaltakes, I have the armour one, same as the kandalf without the full front thingy. Mine just has flappy paddles.. which I took off. Its great for stuffing full of drives.. got 9 in mine. Just get extra drive caddies

Only thing is since its fairly open, you tend to hear more than say a case like the antec P182 which is a rather sealed case with thick walls.
