They actually have a 3.73 ghz in the 5000 series can't remember the tag but...

5000 series processors were the intermediate of the 5100 series and next the 5300 series. Not to say they suck but they don't bench well, alot of people were complaining... wondering why they even released the 5000 series when intel a month later came out with the 5100 series.

just playing around with a new Core 2 Extreme QX6700 @3,33GHz:

              Core 2 6400 @3,33 = 4:42
              Core 2 QX6700 @2,66 = 2:52
              Core 2 QX6700 @3,33 = 2:15
              Opteron 285 = 3:20
              Opteron 275 = 3:58

Randy - interesting. I assume you are overclocking your QX6700 to 3.33? How are you going about this - what are your temperatures and is it fairly stable? I heard idle temperatures run fairly hot on the QX6700.

Temps are at 45°C after few hours now, but I would recommend a very good cooling solution. My Arctic freezer was not able to keep temps under 60°. Bought a Zalmann CNPS9700 (@1500rpm), now everything is fine (23°idle, ~45° load). Of course its stable and just audible

I sent this to a Dell Precision 490 dual 5160 with 2 GB of RAM running 3ds max 9 on regular 32 bit WinXP Pro.

Based on the dual 5160s, it seems like it would be more economically feasible to go with a single quad QX6700 in which you don't have to get specific RAM nor spend the extra $600-700. I guess it depends on how much 20 seconds really means to you.

Dual 5160s are fastest at the moment but will also cost $600 and more. It seems the QX6700 will work but you'll lose on ~45 seconds (and it's still pretty darn fast.) The AMD 4x4s are a disappointment until AMD releases their quads middle of next year. I personally recommend staying away from the Macpros (also fitted with dual 5160s) as there are some PSU shortages if you're going to upgrade to one of the newer graphics cards.

We need a bigger bench mark.
