  • Vray on second computer?

I've upgraded to a more current/powerfull workstation. I want to use Max 9 with Vray on it. I can keep Max installed on my older machine and use it on the new machine with the portable licenes utility. Is there any way to use Vray like this (on both machines)?

I plan to have the new machine as the primary rendering machine but . I have switched from CRT to LCD monitors. In progress and previously completed projects need to stay on the old machine so the colors and appearance aren't altered.

It's like what would you do if you had Vray on your workstation but needed to also have it on a laptop for occaisional work away from the office?

Is there a way to do this short of purchasing a second copy of Vray?

talk to your vray suplier about getting a dongle (if they have it. if not then you will have to use vrays liscence server through network)

If the computers are networked you can just tell V-Ray on the new computer to look for the license on the old one, just supply the old computers name or IP in the "license Server Information" of the Authorization roll-out

So Iinstalled Vray on the new machine. Opened Max. Clicked on "Edit/set license server info" Dialog box with 4 fields opens.

-License server - I typed the IP address of the computer where the license is.

-Port - this is set to 30303 by default, I have no idea what this is. I tried with default and with nothing in the feild

            -Username ? don't think I need this
            -Password ? don't think I need this

I cannot get Vray to render on the new machine. I get a "error could not obtain license" message.

Will this, if I can figure out how to make it work, allow me to use Vray on the new computer just as I am using it now on the older computer? I really need to be able to do this. Just like using the Max portable license utility.

            Thanks for any help

make sure your old pc is running, and that the you have the license server running there. Also make sure your new pc has acces trough the network to the old pc (firewall etc...)

Yes, V-Ray is able to share a license over the network.

A few things, make sure the Vray License server is running on the old box, that you do not have a session of vray running on the old box (only one can access at a time). What version are you using? When you installed it did it ask if you had a software or hardware license, if so did you choose software? Check on the old computer to see what port it was using, it has changed a couple times depending on the version.

I have the old machine running with Max and Vray closed. I'm using Vray version 1.5 RC3.

When I installed it I selected software license. I gave it my previous license request code obtained from the first install on my older machine.

Checked the port on the older machine. It is 30303, I used this

I can see what I believe is the Vray server in my network places on older machine. RP614v4 I believe this is it because I don't know what it is otherwise. I can also see the folders that I have shared on the new machine.

When I look at my network places on the new machine it shows the shared folders on the older machine but I do not see the Vray server or for that matter the server that has my domain hosted on it (this also is available from my network places on the older computer). Not sure if I should be able to see these servers from the new machine with my computer/network places. Is this my trouble?

you can see a screen shot of my network places

Here is the latest reply I got from the Chaos Group:

                    >>You are not able to run your single V-Ray license on both of your machines at the same time.
The only thing we can do for you is to authorize your second workstation for a week until you set up completely this computer.

Here is some information about the V-Ray license that you should bear in mind in the future:
One V-Ray Advanced license purchased allows one to:
                    * work in the standard max network rendering mode on an UNLIMITED number of machines; this means that the 3ds max backBurner could beused for animations on as many machines as you would like to with a single V-Ray license;
                    * render in the V-Ray Distributed rendering mode on up to 10 computers(counted per machine, not per CPU); that is only when you calculate a single frame throughout your render farm.

If you would like to open the V-Ray's interface or to render separately on more than one machine, you need to purchase additional V-Ray licenses.

Let us know if we could help you with anything else<<

This person cannot understand that I do not want to run Vray on both machines at the same time. I want/need to switch the license back and forth between the new and old machines. Finish a project(s) that was started on the old machine and begin new project on new machine. Use one machine at a time.

It sounds like from some of the replies above that this should be doable but I'm completely confused as to whether this is possible.

I asked my supplier (Vismaster) about the dongle option. They replied that they may become available at some unknown date in the future. this entire issue is turning into a frustrating time sink.

It's been mentioned earlier, but you still haven't verified that you have the Vray License Server running (not the machine, the program found under Chaos Grp-->Vray Adv...-->Licensing). Without this running in the system tray of the machine with the license the new machine won't be able to actually find and use the license. I don't believe this starts up by default and it's not necessary if you're only running Vray on one machine.

I did not have the license server running as you described. I followed your instruction and launched the floating license server on the older machine that has the Vray license. It is now visible in the system tray.

Unfortunately, I still get the same "cannot obtain license " message in the Vray Authorization rollout on the new machine.

I tried to launch the license server on the new machine but get error message "Invalid licnese etc."

Thanks for your help, still can't seem to get it working.

Is the vrlserver on the old machine gettign caught by windows firewall or something like that? It works straight away for me here when I put in the name of another machine as the license server in the vray render dialog - is it that the new machine can't see the port of the old machines license server?

                            As already stated above ^

Should be as easy as turning on the license server on your old machine named (oldComp) for purposes of this explanation.

                            1. Make sure the Floating License server is running on the old machine
                            2. Make sure 3dsmax is not running on your old machine (actually just vray, but this is easier)
                            3. on your new machine make sure it can see your old machine (oldComp) on the network
                            4. Open 3dsmax on the new machine, hit f10, in the authorization tab click "edit / set license server information"
                            5. in License server: "oldComp"
                            6. in Connection Port: "30303"
                            7. press ok, restart max, done.

                            Good luck,

Thank you all for trying to help me with this.

I have followed the steps exactly as outlined above and including disabling my internet security/firewall software on both machines. I have confirmed that windows firewall is off on both machines. I can ping the ip address of each machine from the other.

I still get the "could not obtain license" in Vray on the new machine.
