I say VRayLightMtl if for no other reason than a person would be able to save a library of working "presets" into a *.mat file. You could even have a single Multi-Sub material in your scene containing all of your light types, nearly giving you the same accessability as a light lister. Then, you would also have an option of modifier functionality by using the Material modifier if that was desired, with a little more setup, but still functional.

Just my thoughts, and a little late at that.

Thanks for the input guys. Right now I've settled for a "Mesh" option in the VRayLight with full support for exclude lists, visibility etc; plus some simplified options in VRayLightMtl.

      Best regards,
      Vlado

material all the way. but with a way to shut them off globally that doesn't require removing the material.. either through vray object properties, or through the global options

One thing I didn't consider was that as a light I could attach it to any geometry but what if I had many different geometry pieces?

Would each piece be a separate light or could one light reference multiple pieces of geometry?

In that case a material might be better.

It is certainly easier with a material, although the light can use a mesh that has disjoint areas. Further on, with a light, the mesh is just used to define the shape of the light - the placement of the light is separate from that of the source mesh. This is so that you can place many identical lights as instances at various places of the scene. With a material on the other hand, the object it is applied on is turned into a mesh light.

                Best regards,
                Vlado

Will the light take the shape of the attached meshes then? Would be difficult to place them otherwise.

                        Great

Then will the lights always need the referenced geometry? Would be cool I think if the meshes could be baked into the light so they could become autonomous, to build libraries of custom light shapes without needing to worry about the associated geometry.

did you mean - so they could become atomic?
