Which GI engine did you use?

In any case, take a look here:
    http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/150S...lights.htm#ex7

As you can see, the final result is a combination of direct lighting and GI.

Yep, it will work if you disable GI and turn the Direct lighting option on.

Direct light does not work when used in a Multi/Sub-Object material. Is that correct? At least it didn't for me.

Can you disable GI for just that material using the VRayMtlWrapper on the VRayLightMtl...or will that mess up the direct lighting also?

I would test myself, but it may be a week or two before I get SP3 installed due to workload.

                      from the online help:

The direct illumination options currently only work properly if the VRayLightMtl material is the only material applied on the object. They will not work if the material is part of a complex material like a Multi/sub-object material or a VRayBlendMtl material. This restriction will probably be removed in a future release.

I'm pretty sure this is a known "bug". And by bug I think it's a design feature or something, ie. it's intentional. Something about it not being able to emit from a matID - it's either the whole object or nothing.

I bring up this thread to post a problem with vraylightMtl direct illumination option.

In the attached image you can see the same plane, the first with vraylightmtl direct illumination ON and the second with a vraylight with mesh option enabled appiled.

The first doesn't cast any shadow and direct illumination

The vraylightmtl isn't part of MultiSubObject.

                              Theorically there shouldn't be differences.

                              What's wrong?

                              Thanks in advance
