  • Potato Chips with thickness-need help!

    Hello everyone,

I am working on a project where I have a bowl of potato chips that need to be as close to photo-real as possible. I had some ok results with vray 2sided mat(leaf tutorial) when the objects were single sided geo, but unfortunately I need to have thickness. So now I have been experimenting with sss2. I have been using the vray manual as a guide, and tried the potato preset as a base. when I add a bitmap to either the overall color or diffuse color, the potato preset becomes much darker than the material without. So I adjusted the overall color to 50.0, and the diffuse amount to .75. Better but still dark. I am also having problems with the spec/reflections. I am not getting enough control over the reflect using IOR.
Any suggestions for all of the issues mentioned? sorry I cant show any images.

    Thanks for any help!

    Todd

Yeah, the modeling isn't the problem, the material is the issue. I think I may have solved it, rendering now

      Thanks for the reply!

          Hey Ruben,

I am on the right track, I need to tweak it a bit more.
The best solution was a vray material with ward brdf, a grunge image controlling the refraction amount. Kept the refract glossiness around .7, the ior at 1.1, and the max depth at 3. The thing I found was that SSS isn't really necessary. I also stayed away from the translucency types like wax. I used a .6 reflection glossiness with falloff. Sorry I can't post more than this right now, this is work related. I'll post a small image when I get the chance to upload somewhere.
