Slate is just a trap for new players.

Never use the slate editor either. I can appreciate it is a good way of showing someone how a material is set up, but to work with... If it ain't broke; don't fix it.Check out my (rarely updated) blog @ http://macviz.blogspot.co.uk/

I tried using slate in Max2013 but found it slow and reverted to the familiar. I'm now using the late editor 99% of the time in Max2014. I'm finding it really useful and quicker than the standard material editor. It also means I can rely less on my worsening memory!Kind Regards,

I love you all haha, my faith in humanity is somewhat restored haha
Now imagine if you opened the tutorial and it was all done in slate!
Node based workflows can be awesome but this was a major let down.admin@masteringcgi.com.au

I opened Slate the other day expecting to be easily able to set it up so that I could link two different values to one float controller and have a math operator to add 10 to the value on one of the connections... nope!Maxscript made easy....

I find it odd because, as i'm sure a lot of you guys do as well, I have a 2 screen monitor setup. And having a fullscreen nodal-based material editor on my left screen is tons better than a tight, compacted, limited and ultimately outdated material editor that doesn't resize and has limited material slots. In the beginning the slate editor was laggy and buggy, but now I have next to no problems with using it. Frankly, i've never gone back to the old one. So easy to make materials this way in one giant working sheet where i can have bitmaps floating seperately, drag > copy, multiple tabs. I really don't see what the hate is all about really. And if you make a mess you can easily have them automagically arranged again. Not to mention the advantage of seeing your material tree in one bat of the eye.Last edited by elivnA; 27-11-2013, 07:00 AM.
