How does EC2 work in terms of the vray license? I need a node license for every instance?

Yes, you will need one Render Node license for each virtual machine (instance) used for rendering.

do you have any info on Google's cloud computing. I tried Amazon's, a private service, and I want to try Google. Or, is it the same as the VMWare cloud service (DAAS)?

You can use a cloud for ActiveShade and I've done this a few times, but usually the network speed ruins the experience (at least, from our office in Bulgaria).

So how complex was the scene, i.e. how long did it take on your own system?

I set up an instance, but that is as far as I got. I am waiting for Google to enter the DAAS space. But, like everything Google, it's less expensive.

Glorybound, maybe you can answer a simple (stupid) question...do I have to install windows 7, 3dsMax, Vray, etc., on the instance - I don't quite get how that works on a server?

not stupid at all. If it is like Amazon, which I am assuming it is, you install just like normal. You create images (everything installed like you like it) and when you call up an instance, you pick that image. You can work on one instance and call up more when you go to render. But, having said that, you'll need a VRay license for every machine (brilliant move on Chaos Group).

I just worked on a job that used GarageFarm. Excellent pricing and VERY fast, but they are quite clueless when it comes to Max, so you really need to hold their hand. They even discouraged us from using XRefs, but we eventually got them to make it work. One of the two or three people you might have to deal with is a total jerk. And for some reason they upload a lot of passes that your file isn't even set up to render, which is weird. BUT the price and speed I can't complain about at all.

Personally, I don't have time for jerks, so I'll pass in that one.

I assume I should choose windows servers, or does it matter?
Yeah, Vray is making bank on the whole render node thing, but then I think they deserve it too.

Max is tighted to windows unfortunately.
