I'm quite against cropping myself, but I know someone in my unit that would LOVE that idea!!!

Yes I agree with you, which is why I said if you HAVE to for whatever reason.
There can be plenty reasons why you need to cancel a render, or CRASH for that matter. A cropped image is better than NO image

Ha! Its happened to me as well, all of a sudden wondering why it takes so long to render a very small scene.... :S

My first reaction was NO!!!!! But then I thought about it.... why have it if it results to be a nuisance more often than not when your mind is somewhere else? So I think it is a good idea, you also have the section render in case you want to see something going on in your scene.... By the way, will progressive be able to be stopped and re-started at last rendering spot? Cause that may be one hell of a change that will make a lot of people happy.

Yes, this is planned - not only for the progressive renderer, but for the bucket renderer too.
