Hi,
Was just testing the Corona 1.4 demo that was just released. Got to say they are improving it quite quickly & Nicely, here is what I took from using it for people that are interested.
1) Quality is very similar between vray and Corona. Differences I see are mainly in reflections, especially solid glass.
2) Render speed, hands down the all mighty Vray. And in corona you don't seem to have much control at all at getting better render times, though I have limited experience with it. There render times are still very respectable, but not ideal for animation like vray.
3) Interactive renderer, WAY BETTER than vray's unfortunately. This is one area vray needs to take note, there interactive renderer although CPU based is 1 to 1 for what you get in the final render. It is pretty much Vray's ADV progressive renderer with interactive updating.
4) Multiple Render regions, kind of a nice tool to have, vrays is also great but having multiple is cool to test certain sections at once.
5) Corona materials, This might be my total preference but I find coronas material layout and how it handles settings in materials much easier to get what you want. Also corona has it's own custom material previews that is way better than defaults Max's for showing exactly what your material is going to look like.
So from my limited time all I can say is vray needs a update to it's material system UI and Preview, and for some settings like anisotropy & Fog Color to have easier setting like i find in corona. I know Material Layout has been a topic lately. The other is the interactive renderer, for the love of god we need this, this kills CPU RT, the great thing about Vray RT is we get GPU also, But Vray CPU should really be part of Vray ADV to me since it should be the progressive renderer with a one to one output of the production renderer. In corona Interactive renderer is actually a button instead of changing over to activeshade mode, or that button is actually changing corona over to activeshade mode and then back again when you close out the render view, not sure but it feels a lot more fluid. Vlado does such an amazing job of updating Vray that some of these things might already be in development. What do you think about these two things Vlado?
Other than that, Vray is solid and not taking anything away from Corona which does amazing things and some better than Vray but it can't touch vray in a lot of areas. I have great respect for both and both developers, at the end of the day its a personal choice, I choose Vray.
