  • Corona 1.4

    Hi,

Was just testing the Corona 1.4 demo that was just released. Got to say they are improving it quite quickly & Nicely, here is what I took from using it for people that are interested.

    1) Quality is very similar between vray and Corona. Differences I see are mainly in reflections, especially solid glass.

    2) Render speed, hands down the all mighty Vray. And in corona you don't seem to have much control at all at getting better render times, though I have limited experience with it. There render times are still very respectable, but not ideal for animation like vray.

    3) Interactive renderer, WAY BETTER than vray's unfortunately. This is one area vray needs to take note, there interactive renderer although CPU based is 1 to 1 for what you get in the final render. It is pretty much Vray's ADV progressive renderer with interactive updating.

    4) Multiple Render regions, kind of a nice tool to have, vrays is also great but having multiple is cool to test certain sections at once.

    5) Corona materials, This might be my total preference but I find coronas material layout and how it handles settings in materials much easier to get what you want. Also corona has it's own custom material previews that is way better than defaults Max's for showing exactly what your material is going to look like.

So from my limited time all I can say is vray needs a update to it's material system UI and Preview, and for some settings like anisotropy & Fog Color to have easier setting like i find in corona. I know Material Layout has been a topic lately. The other is the interactive renderer, for the love of god we need this, this kills CPU RT, the great thing about Vray RT is we get GPU also, But Vray CPU should really be part of Vray ADV to me since it should be the progressive renderer with a one to one output of the production renderer. In corona Interactive renderer is actually a button instead of changing over to activeshade mode, or that button is actually changing corona over to activeshade mode and then back again when you close out the render view, not sure but it feels a lot more fluid. Vlado does such an amazing job of updating Vray that some of these things might already be in development. What do you think about these two things Vlado?

Other than that, Vray is solid and not taking anything away from Corona which does amazing things and some better than Vray but it can't touch vray in a lot of areas. I have great respect for both and both developers, at the end of the day its a personal choice, I choose Vray.

Thanks for your input; all valid points and as you know we are working on many of them.

I only slightly disagree about the material preview; in my experience people stop looking at it as soon as they learn their way around the material set up. But whatever, it does look nice.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

I guess it's a preference with the material preview, but I do find it much more handy to see a more realistic representation of the material like in corona or even Thea render. Then the interactive renderer would help that a lot too. I use RT CPU sometimes for the material tests, but it gets to clunky compared to coronas more fluid interaction. Also I have different results from production render which really throws me off sometimes.

Yes, I said I agree about the RT. Let's leave it at that and come back to this discussion in a few months

+1 on the custom material preview
...especially for materials with SSS this would be valuable.
I tried setting up "juice" material in Corona and in vray and i have to say i was a lot quicker in corona although it was the first time i used it - mostly thanks to the materiál preview

Lol, sorry didn't mean to sound like I was bashing RT, it's still amazing what you did with it, and I am looking forward to the next few months

Just a little note. IR button in Corona doesn't change Corona to ActiveShade and then back once you close it. It completely bypasses Activeshade and uses it's own solution, which has lots of benefits, but also a few little drawbacks.

Most importantly though, the general design of ActiveShade is a terrible idea, as it suggests interactive renderer should have it's own, unique set of render settings, which is a nonsense. Vast majority of settings should be derived from production renderer, and there should be only a few minor overrides for IR mode. That's the case with Corona.

Of course, we should take into consideration that ActiveShade was probably written on a parchment paper back in the days when horses were state of the art vehicles. Therefore we can't really blame the original wizards for not predicting future clearly enough

Yes, I'll probably avoid the ActiveShade approach for the interactive production renderer too.

Btw there is a button on the V-Ray toolbar for running V-Ray RT without switching renderers.

Yes, I use that from time to time, but it's still a bit clumsy, because it respects output resolution, while most of the time, I want to run IR at much smaller res, so it is actually interactive I usually end up constantly switching resolutions between IR and non-IR rendering. Not very comfortable experience.

Yes, that's a pain. I'm sure we can make it better

Well, anyway... I'd say let's focus all the effort and time into interactive V-Ray ADV, and make it better there. And forget that RT CPU ever existed

There are serious problems of the corona, backburner and Dr problems.

+1 on the custom material preview (incl. GI)
This might be negligible for long time v-ray users, but coming from Maxwell this is something that really bothers me.
