With the suggestions here, several years ago about getting a DSL and playing around, I found how much money you have to spend to get a lens that doesn't have these issues. I stopped using chromatic aberration a year ago and I don't think I have missed it.

Different strokes! For nearly every vfx shot I do there's some lens vignette, warp and chroma added to all our cg renders to mimic the properties of the lens that shot it - the imperfections are a big part of what makes our stuff feel real!

I do the vignette... I might put other things back in

so that old thing got dug out. I now realised - forgot to post the shader I was using: single plane in front of camera, additive vray blend mtl with 3 refractive lyers (refraction colour red/blue/green, cyan/yellow/magenta or whatever else fitting a+b+c=1.0) and ior of 0.097, 1.000 and 1.003 (or similar to control the strength of aberration.

How are you guys adding it in post? I was using a plugin, in PS, but it adds a lot of blur.

photoshop is enough. but it is blur of sort. easy to overdo it.

The software used is CINEMA 4D [Octane render?], but there is an interesting demo by Mr.Jeremy Cox.

Did this ever get beyond the state of an experiment? Would something like this still work with V-Ray 6?

I pay a lot of money for lenses that don't have this issue . I never really understood adding it into an image unless you want to mimic an old camera.

We would love something like this in Vray, even if it means heavier renders when using it. Have a look at what it's possible in blender right now - https://www.blendermarket.com/produc...ack-v1?ref=586

There are no lenses that do not have any amount of chromatic aberration. You will get CA with any lens, no matter how expensive, in certain conditions.

Yes, but will you see it in better lenses?

Yes, depending on the scenario. You will get CA with perfect lenses, too. Especially on high-contrast edges like a dark window frame against a bright background behind the window etc.
The amount of CA will get smaller with better lenses, but it will still be visible, mostly towards to corners of an image.

And most cinematographers specifically eschew the more perfect lenses, opting for older lenses with more flaws because they give the image more character.

                                this thing looks spectacular.

anyone with camera shader experience in VRay? is CA possible with it?
