This happens periodically, but once is too many. My VRay seems to go on strike and it stops working.

Try turning off displacement from Global Switches and disabling any scattered object from rendering. RAM filling up like that points to loading stuff like geometry into memory before starting rendering. I've had this happen on a few occasions and AFAIK it was always bugged geometry with displacement or a botched scattering or Particle Flow operation.
BTW, what's up with the 2 minute startup time of Max? You might want to check that out. I would tear my hair out if I had to wait that long each launch. For reference mine takes just 15-20 sec. I hope you are not running your OS and apps off of an HDD (the old magnetic disks).Last edited by Alex_M; 28-11-2018, 06:23 PM.Aleksandar Mitov

I’ll have to look into how I have my drives setup. I have an SSD and a SATA, but it has been a few years. I think I have my programs and O/S on the SATA and my files and assets on the SSD.Bobby Parker

Yes, turning off displacement solved it, but obviously, that isn't a solution. I was putting on ridge caps and all was going good, up until I put the last one on. Oh yeah, my O/S and applications are on the SSD and my assets are on my SATA HD.Bobby Parker

If you notice, it's the V-Ray toolbar that sits waiting to load. I don't know if something before it is holding things up, but that's the last thing that happens before I can do anything. A while ago it was V-Ray waiting for the license, but I thought that was fixed.Bobby Parker

You should probably benchmark your SSD to make sure it is not the issue
And you should have at least 30 GB or so free on your windows drive.. or else this will slow down many thingsLast edited by Muhammed_Hamed; 29-11-2018, 10:11 AM.

I do monitor my drives. My HD is at 100%, but my SSD is getting old. I found errors on the SSD that Windows can't fix, so I am keeping an eye on it. I'm due for an upgrade, so I am looking at my options. The SSD once said 36 days life remaining, but that has been for months and it has gone up since then, so I am not sure how accurate it is.
