I tried V-Ray Sun/Sky and Material Override, but it didn't help. I turned off my Forest Pro elements and it fixed the issue.

      fPro it is then, thanks!
A scene to support and a mention of this thread would still be great!

So a colleague of mine had the same issue (in the GI pass). I checked his scene and there were still some Autodesk Materials. The Vray Scene Converter DOESN'T convert these to VrayMTL, but they do cause problems, so I just overrode those and the problems were gone. I can't check your scene because I'm still on MAX 2018, but I suspect some wonky material.

Mmmh, were these materials the odd things that came in from third parties?
It's great to know, but if they are what i think they are, i am not sure they can be converted to meaningful stuff.
They could be likely replaced, though.

I for one never keep any materials coming from any packages, only my own, or carefully checked when using downloaded models. These materials particularly came from a Revit scene hence Autodesk materials. I don't know if they can be converted to anything useful, in any case here's a link to what they are.

We talked about this before in some other discussion though. https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/...odesk-materail And the suggestion was to use the 3dsmax converter first, then the vray converter.

Interesting. I have a material converter that converts Autodesk materials. I'll try that.

Best way to check if your scene has materials that aren't up to the task is using the zorb script, you can see all types of materials and maps used in the scene (beware that for complex scenes you need some patience). You can also select the objects then that could have these incorrect materials applied. Zorb has in many ways saved lots of time debugging scenes.

The FixUtilities also checks, which I used looking for Raytrace materials, but didn't find anything. Question is, why do non-V-Ray materials cause such havoc in V-Ray?

Because they are non-Vray materials VrayMTLs are optimized, and Vray knows exactly what they can or can't do. Chaos has the 'translator' for Standard (3dsmax) materials, but they can't make a translator for every tropical material there is from other packages or render engines. It wouldn't be feasible or optimized.

That is fine, except I converted to Corona and it rendered fine and then I tried the UMC convertor in V-Ray and that fixed it.

So the problems are gone? Good to hear. Indeed it wouldn't hurt for the converter to have more options like the corona one has, even the option to change the assigned renderer to Vray when converting for instance, should be there, like Corona's converter.

Yes, the problem is gone. I didn't think it was a material thing, because a gray override didn't solve it. Converting in Corona worked and so did the UMC in V-Ray. All is good.
