  • Viewport Fails

I have reported this in the past, but I can't seem to find it. My viewport freezes often. I can save and pulldown menus, but the viewport is dead. I can hide everything; everything is hidden, but the viewport doesn't update. This happens when I stop a render and happens often. Everything on my machine is updated, including video driver (RTX 4090).

It's simply that you have Disabled the viewport is it?

    https://help.autodesk.com/view/3DSMA...5-D111CB680366

If that is your problem the viewport will have the word "<Disabled>" at the top. If it's not the issue, I have no clue, sorry. (If you accidentally hit Control-Shift-D, which is surprisingly easy to do, as I end up doing it at least a couple times a week.)

No, that isn't it, but thank you. I cancel a render and 50-50 chance the viewport freezes. I am sure it'll fix itself someday, but it has been this way for a few months.

Weird. What exactly do you mean by the viewport freezes?

Viewport issues sounds like GPU drivers. Make sure you have exactly (not newer or older) "Recommended NVIDIA driver for V-Ray GPU is version 546.01" as it is the recco for VRay, and works well with Max.

I am working in CPU, but I also rolled back to the recommended GPU, which didn't help. Freeze, I mean, it doesn't update. MAX isn't freezing; only the viewport is. I can't pick anything, but I can turn off/on layers, but again, it doesn't update in the viewport.

Remember the drivers are what actually draws to the screen. That would definitely be my first suspect. Can you look at your update logs and maybe see if they were updated when the issue started? Windows will auto update nvidia drivers unless you just through some registry hoops. Check your current version in the nvidia control panel to be sure they are indeed that specified version— nothing older or newer.

Also make sure you are using the studio driver, not the gaming driver.

Correct driver (per GPU page) and is still froze the viewport after a render cancel.

Okay, I think I know what is going on. I have a script that sends me a text through Telegraph when MAX finishes a render. When I cancel a render when the script is enabled, it freezes the viewport. If I let the render finish, it works as it should.

Nope! Still freezes without the plugin enabled.

I just updated both Railclone and Forest Pro (both got updates this week), and it is happening almost every V-Ray cancel now. Railclone was the other day, and nothing changed; it was today when I upgraded Forest Pack that has gotten worse.

It makes working impossible! After I cancel a V-Ray render, almost every time. I rolled back drivers and installed studio drivers; it doesn't matter.

Any chance that executing the Maxscript line enableSceneRedraw() fixes your viewport in these situations? What you describe sounds like what I typically experience when one of my scripts crashes halfway, where the viewport redraw has been disabled at the beginning to speed things up, and then the command to re-enable it doesn't get executed.

I've been having exactly the same issue for the past few years! The viewports become empty and I can't select anything. Are you using Distributed rendering by any chance? One very important thing to note is that for me it happens only if I use Distributed rendering, and just like you, it's a 50:50 chance that it will happen after rendering with DR turned on. To say that it is extremely annoying would be an understatement since the only fix for it is to restart Max. I've changed my workstation 2 times since this issue appeared and it still happens even with the latest version V-Ray 6 Update 2. I've reported this in the past, but it was never resolved. Here are the threads:

Yes, I usually use DR. I'll pay attention if it happens when I don't. I tried the command line thing posted above, but it didn't do anything.
