There 's never been any spawner.ini file...
    Vray always use default configuration.

I don't understand your process, jujubee, you mean I leave Max8
then install Max7 and reinstall Vray on Max8 ??
But as I have already installed Vray, Maybe a track of it remains somewhere...

    Why not ?
But it's quite a bite like my former system.

Nevertheless, thank you for your help.

      You called it jujubee!

I installed MAX7 and now it's working. I didn't have to reinstall MAX8 or vray 1.48.03. I just hit the spawner after installing MAX7 and it worked.
I would never have tried that or even suspected that this could be the problem. Chaos needs to take a serious look at this problem.

Thanks for the information, I'm now running on all engines!

We really should try to figure out what it is that fixes it, my first guess is a different reg key for backburner 2 that backburner 3 doesn't have.

Someone else has written me and said this works. Of course I don't have time to do a fresh Windows install and test it out but it seems simpler:

You have to start the backburner 3 manager and monitor, connect to the manager and then quit both of them, ... now Vray DR is working. Sorry had no time to investigate more, but it is definitely working. So no need for 3dsmax7. ;o)

I had this problem on Max7.

When I installed Max8, I had no problem utilizing DR on Max8. I haven't tried whether or not I still have the problem with Max7.

you dont have to install Max7 - you just need to uninstall Backburner 3 & install Backburner 2. Thats my experience anyway...

I'm getting this same thing on my laptop, which I just reformatted and installed max8 on.

Vlado -- why isn't there a fix for this yet? I have to reformat all our workstations in a couple weeks for rolling out some new hardware and there's no way I feel like installing max twice on all of them.

                    Thanks for the workaround, Juju!

worst case scenario, im sure there are plenty of registry comparision programs out there.

Just compare to before and after you installed max7 and then find the entry that was added (assuming its a registry problem) and then make a .reg file of that entry then just run it on each machine... should work.

If you're running the spawner as a service it's important that you set the service login account to a local user with admin privs.

thats crazy, you just need to install backburner that ships with 3ds max 7 and all is working perfectly

Thanks guys. Just glad to have it working on my end and yours.

I've heard from soneone else that an install of the earlier backburner does the trick (instead of the full Max install.)

This is the definitive easy as hell fix for the BB/Vray spawner error.
Up untill now you had to go through the two step process. A: uninstall max8 BB and B: install max7 BB. takes too long. simple solution, run max8 BB manager (on a fresh install you will have to go through that BB setup screen asking about subnet and timeouts and all sorts of crap, just click ok to run BB) once manager has run once, poof vray spawner will work. Notice. if you remove max8 BB and replace it with max7 BB on some computer and on others use max8BB then the machines with the max7 BB will run the spawner without it crashing however it will not join in on a render.
