  • VRay and shave & Haircut

    hi again,
we're making a little spot at the moment with some letters wich have to be coverd with grass.
i've used shave & Haircut in max 8, renderd as geometry.

    here an example

its only a 2 second animation, the rendertime is about 5 min. per frame,
but on every frame he needs about 30 min. for prepairing the hole thing, and uses more than 2 GB memory. i think there isn't to much geometry in there round about 20.000 hairs with 3 knot points.
is there anything for speeding it up?
    like a cache or something?

    best regards
    jonas

I'm not sure if you can generate the geometry to the viewport and then export that as a proxy, but it might be worth a try.

Other than that, have you looked into VRayFur?

    Best regards,

      hi vlado,
yes VRay Fur is great, i've first try'd it, but i'am missing that you can use instanced geometry. there are two hair segments, the grass and the flowers.
and the material editor in shave & haircut is great i think.
the problem with the proxis is that the grass is animated.
there are one vray light and one spot in there, and he needs about 15 min. for "preparing the global light manager".

      best regards

try lowering the face/level coef. to 0.6 in the Vray: System rollout.
That should give you a nice speed boost

I dont know exactly how to explain it. Best to look here.
              http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/VRay...ams_system.htm

Basically for scenes like that with lots of grass etc.. lowering that will help speed up the render, but it will use more memory, you can probabaly go even lower still.

              Good to know it helped

this a little sequenze from the grass sequenze.
10 min. per frame without GI.
