I have a plane that I can't get displacement to work on. I can crank the displacement up to 10' and it is still flat. Any clues?

funny u mention it, i found the same problem...i had to switch over to 3d displacement to get it done...2d displacement just didn t work on a correct tipology!

Do you have a scene for this? Did the geomtry have proper mapping coordiantes?

        displacement

It is mapped the way I have always mapped it. It worked up until yesterday. I exported the object out to Autocad and then imported it back into MAX. Once back into MAX I applied the UVW and Displacement. Would you like to see the model?

Yep, like I said, a scene would be good to take a look at. You can send one to vlado@chaosgroup.com

Thanks for the scene. The problem is that for 2d displacement mapping you need to use Explicit UVW mapping coordinates for your bitmap. Object XYZ is not going to work. This is because 2d displacement pre-samples the displacement map separately from the geometry and it cannot provide the required 3d coordinates, but only 2d UV ones. If you really must use Object XYZ mapping then you have to use 3d displacement.

              Best regards,
              Vlado

                  displacement

It still isn't working for me. I think something is wrong with my model. The units seem correct, but somthing just isn't working. I'll post when I find out what is up.

Can you explain Explicit UVW mapping?

i was using a smoke map as a displacemet map, and it was set to object xyz.
that was the problem in my scene. just seted the map to explicit map chanel and it worked fine with an uvw maping+vray displacement modifier.

In the Bitmap options, on the top , where <Texture>/<Environment> is, there is pulldown menu , to choose the type of mapping.

It was working ok here with your scene, but with a different texture map (I used a newer V-Ray build though, let me know if you want to try it with your scene).
