That sounds promising then..maybe if they resolve the mental ray issues they will be solving the Vray render time issues at the same time.

If you running design 2010 Ken has a "fix" on his blog over at the Area.
http://area.autodesk.com/index.php/b...x_design_2010/
If you running plain max 2010 you should have this fix already. If not, well then Autodesk buy Houdini or go back to the drawing board.

Please can you guys also confirm which 2010 you using and getting slowdowns. 2010 plain or 2010 design?Last edited by Morne; 01-05-2009, 06:06 AM.Kind Regards,

I've tried Ken fix and nothing seems to happend. Render times still are way long in 2010 than 2009.
Same scene in
2009 - 20'' 11'
2010 - 24'' 25'
I'm using 3ds Max 2010 Design

OK here are my tests with Max 2010 (just max not max design)
I have a file 316mb. (obviosuly very polygon heavy!)
2009
Open very slowly in 2009 and saves even worse.
Render 26 minutes 55 seconds
2010
Opens faster than 2009 but still saves forever as per 2009.
I already had the settings at 1 and not 0 as Ken suggested.
Before the hotfix Render 28 minutes 50 seconds
After the hotfix Render no change at 28 minutes 50 seconds
Disabling bitmap pager via maxscript I get Render bit better 28 minutes 32 seconds
So in my test 2009 still renders faster than 2010!Kind Regards,
Morne

The optimization described by Ken is related to the way mental ray connection in 3ds Max translates the scene for mental ray. It has no effect on V-Ray.
The general slowdown of the rendering seems to be caused by changes in the way 3ds Max 2010 handles textures. I've submitted a case to the ADN, so hopefully they will figure out what needs to be fixed.
On a side note: Ken's post made me realize how to avoid the Hair&Fur crash with V-Ray in 3ds Max Design - simply choose the "Max" default from Customize > Custom UI and Defaults Switcher and restart 3ds Max.
Best regards,
