  • Splines/Poly showing up in my glass

I've created a V-Ray frosted tempered glass material which seems to work well. However, on occasion, my wireframe will show up! How do I get rid of it?

this just looks like bad normals to me. Did you try setting the normal smoothing angle?

I'm fairly new at this, so bear with me...

So to set the normal smoothing angle, I do what? I went to the modifier stack in my Editable Mesh I found "Smoothing Groups". The value was 45.0, but I clicked on "Auto Smooth". It did help quite a bit, but it is still there in a few areas.

      Thanks.

for hard objects like this you need fairly low smooth value so the normals don't get rounded too much. There is a value near the smoothing group (45) is a generally accepted good angle but you need to go lower like 15 or 10. If your glass is straight, i.e. there is no dents or imperfections in it, then low value will do the trick.

Also you can add a smooth modifier overtop of your geometry or multiple objects and control the smoothing groups that way.

i find thin triangles like that also make problems with reflections and refractions. try to remodel it with better topo

Do you need to have those holes cut into it? Find some tutorials on cutting shapes out, it looks like you've done a boolean and thats a pretty fast track to messy geometry.

The holes are for the hinge hardware to go through. It's a .max file that my client created with Inventor and passed it off to me to render. The odd thing is that it's only an issue on the black version of the furniture. With the white version, I can't see it at all. I'll check out the link you sent to me. Maybe I need to re-model as Da_Elf suggested. Otherwise, would a third party program like Polytrans, or the like help with eliminating the triangles?

I know you need the holes irl, but can you tell that there is a hole in the render? Surely the hinge hardware can simply pass through the glass?

If not, you need to remodel it. The link is how to remodel it.

No, I wouldn't know why I'd need holes in it... So with that said, can I get away with re-modelling a sheet of glass as a Standard Primitive "Box", or would I need to do something fancier with a mesh? Because it's a finished glass edge, I see that the edges are a bit rounded. So maybe just a line with bezier corners and then an extrude modifier?

Thanks for helping this newbie out!

Okay, so I added an "Edit Mesh" to the stack modifier and then deleted the holes. Along with the holes deletion, went those pesky triangles! Now I have a nice piece of glass with the same rounded edges.

                    Thanks everyone!

                    Dave

Edit: Not to belabor this thread, but it turns out that I didn't need to add and "Edit Mesh" modifier to the stack. I just opened the "Editable Mesh" stack, selected the vertexes and deleted what I didn't want.
