  • Vray Toon bug or workflow suggestion

Been using Vray toon a bit lately and had a couple unexpected problems. This is a test render with normal settings. This is Vray 3.00.02 and Max 2014.

First is when using Object Visibility, I was hoping it would either leave the ink black and fade the object, or fade the object and the ink by the same amount. Instead, this happened.

Another issue I encountered was using the new Vray Clipper object. The problem here is simply that the Vray Toon ink doesn't seem to respect the clipper.

All of these are known; what I don't know yet is how to solve these issues The toon generally only finds out if there is an object or not, but there is no easy way to determine if the part of the object that is hit is invisible or clipped away. I keep coming back to this occasionally but a good solution has not occurred to me yet.

Btw - the VRayVrmatMtl material allows you to create a toon material - maybe it will work better for some of these cases than the global atmospheric effect.

      Hi!

Is it mandatory to use the clipper? for your third situation you could use A "slice" modifier together with a "cap holes". It can be a temporary solution.

      Cheers.

Thanks for the replies! Vlado, I didn't actually know about this VRayVrmatMtl, so I'm going to put some time into reading about that. Right now, as soon as I "create material" in the editor, it crashes me to the desktop every time. I may not be doing something right, but I'll check into it later on.

Datalost, I could try the slice approach. I have a scene with hundreds of objects and I thought the Clipper would be a super quick method to cut some of them away. It actually works great, except I have the Vray Toon effect enabled and that's how I found this bug.

          The related problem

          With V-Ray 3.00.06
It will crash, if Toon Material is created by VRMAT Editor and Preview is clicked.

This works fine for me. Can you tell me which 3ds Max version? If you get a CER dialog, can you get me the crash dump file to vlado@chaosgroup.com ?

In any case, looks like we'll have to rewrite the whole thing from scratch...

            Best regards,
