  • Warning: Invalid geometric normal

As of lately, I have been getting a lot of Normal warnings. This is a new one, but still references that 'normal' is the culprit.

And, each time I stop the render, for whatever reason and start it back up, I get even more of the same warnings. It started with 2-3 and now it's up to 33, however, I have changed nothing in the scene, except for V-Ray render settings.

unicode instance? is it like an asset with Cyrillic name that's messing up something? usually invalid normal can be produced by either a bump or bad geometry, some times if its incorrectly tessellated.

        Hey Bobby
I've had "ïnvalid normal" issues with imported Revit geometry - especially if you perform some kind of Boolean operation on them. Do you have any stuff like that in the scene?

No, I don't think so. I built the model in MAX, however, I imported some iCube iTrees.

In most of the cases where this error appears the final render is not affected but it may lead to bigger render times.
Would it be possible to send us that file? We have similar reports when Embree is enabled or Bitmap set to screen is assigned to the Bump slot.

It's a large project, but I'll see what I can do to send it. Thanks.

I had this on a couple of projects recently, all of them had imported stuff from other software (Sketchup, Revit). The Sketchup one I had would take about 10 minutes to get through all the warnings because there were 1.2 million of them. It still rendered fine, but my god it was tedious. Eventually tracked down the erroneous geometry to a monitor arm/stand in one model - never found the cause in the others.

[Edit] I appreciate this doesn't help you. Just know you're not the only one!

Mine is an exterior and the only thing I didn't model was the trees and bushes. I have used the same trees and bushes for a couple years and I am just now having the issue. The project is large, so it'll take me some time to zip it up and upload it.

It is definitely Evermotion bushes. I deleted them from my scene, because they were not working for me, and the error went away.

I spoke too soon, however, I think it is still Evermotion trees. I deleted the bushes, but not the trees, and when the rendering hits the trees, I get the error. I hoping it;s not slowing things up.

How do I get to V-Ray Support? They game me an answer, however not that I need it, I can't find it.

I found it in my email. I use the displacement roof script, which is causing the warning. Here is support's answer.

Thank you for providing the scene. Apparently the issue is an incorrect geometry in the roof in combination with displacement. To fix that isolate the "shake roof" geometry, set a editable poly modifier for it, and select the geometry from attached Image1. On the back of this geometry move the selected in Image2 polygon down. Do that for both of the geometries. This should fix the warnings.
