To get the best look, you can try to use Stingray shader in DirectX shader.
That should provide most PBR workflow.
Also you can try Physical material.
I also heard Arnold team has plan to make 3dsmax shader presentation better.

For you original request of "good looking hair in viewport", it need to come from hair plugin provider.
around 3dsMax 2017, 3dsMax dev improved hair in vieewport. But, that only applys for max's own hair.
For 3rd party like Ornatrix, ephere have to make viewport shader for ornatrix.
Since Marsel said he is working on it, I'm sure you will get a great hair in viewport soon!

      But look at this!

What cant Chaos group do this for Maya and 3ds max? - looks so damn good! This is what I want!!! - I'm going to learn a bit more about this and then ask Vlado for this feature in a new post.

This is called IPR in both Max and Maya (in Maya it is a little bit better actually, because the interactivity is better). V-Ray has had this since ages.

          Hi Kosso_olli

Yeah I know about IPR and I agree maya's IPR is better particularly when using DR !

But the Renderman viewport render has wire-frame overlay and stuff. - It is an IPR but Blended with Viewport Features like wire frame, so you can model and edit with a blend of what a viewport does and what a path tracer does

Yeah - I have not tested it yet - I asked Peter from Meshman Studio if he can record a demo of it. - I have my fingers crossed too - Apparently you can edit a hair groom in XGen IGS and while rendering at the same time - the viewport and render are blended....at least that's what I think must happen. If it ends up like how I hope, I would love Vlado to take a look at such a feature

That sounds like a terrible idea!
